Apps becoming out-of-date due to malfunction of App Lounge

This is another post about App Lounge troubleshooting. I have found a number of similar topics on this forum, none of which detail my exact problem.

I’ve noticed that some apps started asking me to update them when opening them. I am unable to use said apps until the update is made, so I head to the App Lounge, and the “Update“ section is empty, as if everything is up-to-date.

Hence, I go to the main page of the app lounge, and the apps appear. But if I click on any of them, the install button shows “N/A“ and the app’s weight is 0B. If I open the store’s page for an app that I have installed that I know has an updated pending, it shows just the “Open“ button with again app’s weight at 0B.

It’s clear that something broke sometime ago, and I cannot pinpoint when because I haven’t installed new apps in months.

Currently, my eOS version is 3.2 on a Fairphone 5. I have been using eOS since almost one year. This problem was not present since install, but likely appeared 3-4 months ago without me noticing. By checking the versions of some apps, it seems that I did not get updates since somewhere around August, and OS updates in-between did not resolve.

I tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Followed all steps on App Lounge FAQ.
  • Restarted the phone, disabled VPNs.
  • Uninstalled an app to try and re-install. I was not able to re-install the app.
  • Stopped using anonymous mode, and logged in with a burner google account.

When trying to install any app, I get the following error. Translated, it says “App unsupported because the app either isn’t released yet, or some other error“.

I have found other topics about App Lounge issues (couldn’t put links because of new user limits):

  • App Lounge apps out of date
  • App Lounge stuck on installing
  • Active internet, but apps have no internet access

I could not fix my problem following these threads. I understand that I could try to change store and use Aurora or F-Droid, but I would appreciate to be able to use the App Lounge, as the experience until this problem has been great.

Any help is appreciated.

FP5 - eo/s 3.2. I have also had problems with app lounge behaving strangely. I tried clearing the storage and cache of apps that were listed as needing an update, restarting networking, and the phone. Also logging out of the anonymous account and back in again. In the end I reinstalled an app (duckduckgo) but, it did not show up until I had restarted the phone. I am not too concerned as all apps that I need are still working at the moment.

I had the same issue on my Fairphone 3+ but everything works again since I updated to the latest version v3.3.
Try updating your device via the settings :+1:

I will as soon as I get the chance but, am not being offered it in system updates yet.

It should be already available for your FP5. Try to refresh >5 times in the settings’ updater and it should appear. They are staggering the downloads so not everyone downloads at the same time.

You are right! I didn’t know about refreshing the update screen. Thanks very much.

Hi,

The best option is to use Aurora Store than AppLounge.

for FP5 users it wouldnt have made a difference (without spoofing). V3.3 fixes Aurora behaviour too

I’m asking this here instead of creating a new thread because my question doesn’t feel too much off topic to me.

I have an app showing on the update list but instead of saying “update” it says “install”. Is this a normal, or not-so-unusual, behaviour?

(The app is already installed of course; and reinstalling it would cost a huge amount of mobile data.)

I suggest first check Settings > Apps > your_app_info_page > STORE.

Are you trying to update an app originally from a different source?

Is there a reason not to delay update till you have access to free / unmetered Wi-Fi?

… or name the app to see if others experienced this.

Thanks for your advice!

Yes I guess. It’s a paid app (新明解国語辞典 第八版), installed from Companion microG.
I suspect that it’s a totally new version since I have other paid apps installed this way that don’t ask for installation when they are updated.
I also got “normal” updates for that app in the past.

Yes, no such thing available around here. :winking_face_with_tongue: Also, I got rid of my google account.

After learning the trick that if I keep rechecking for available updates I have finally been offered 3.3 and it does appear to be working. It’s like Christmas!

It is an unfortunate amount of time for such an issue to persist though, given how critical it is to be able to update apps.

Despite people repeatedly saying that installing aurora would not help, I did install it and it did work for me while waiting for this fix.

I will keep aurora handy in case there is an issue again in future; but for now app store appears to be working as before.

It it not a trick kinda, it is Murena team keeping server busy-ness low

Well they failed miserably. Download speed is down to a crawl.

To everyone that answered, thank you for your input. It helped me realize that the issue was being addressed. Indeed, I have seen in the change-logs that update 3.3 should fix my issue.

Unfortunately, the update delivery is giving me (and others, I read) some problems. I had the update available, but the download kept failing. Currently, I don’t have the update available anymore. I’ll wait for the team to sort this out, and once I’ll get the update, I’ll post feedback regarding the App Lounge issue.

I have managed to update to eOS 3.3, and the App Lounge started working immediately.
