Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing a persistent bug with my Fairphone 6 running /e/OS version 3.7.1 and a Vodafone NL eSIM while roaming. Here’s what’s happening:
Issue:
In APN settings (Settings → Network & Internet → Internet → SIM → APN), foreign APN profiles (e.g., from Chinese providers, “CN”) appear as greyed out and cannot be deleted. Other profiles can be removed.
While roaming (e.g., in Switzerland or Germany), the carrier name in the status bar remains “vodafone NL”, even though I’m connected to a local provider (e.g., Swisscom or vodafone.de). On the lock screen is only vodafone NL shown.
Manually created APN profiles do not work, but the default “Hollandse nieuwe” profile (which has the same settings as Vodafone NL) does work.
What I’ve tried so far:
• Resetting APN settings to default.
• Attempting to remove the CN profiles (they are greyed out and cannot be deleted).
• Creating a new APN profile with the same settings as the working one (does not work).
• Reinstalling the eSIM.
• Clearing the cache of SIM-toolkit and SIM-manager.
• Restarting the phone and toggling airplane mode.
Additional info:
• In the Netherlands, everything works fine.
• On a Pixel 8 with Android 16 (same vodafone NL eSIM), the carrier name updates correctly while roaming.
Question:
Is this a known bug in /e/OS 3.7.1? If so, is there a workaround tot show the correct provider?
Thanks in advance for your help!
I had the same experience yesterday driving through Belgium (where it could not connect), Luxemburg (where it did connect), Switzerland (no connection) and Italy (also no connection). I’m also using a FP6 with e/os 3.7.1. Fortunately I had another phone with me which helped me out for the data connection. After my arrival in Italy I’ve been able te resolve the issue by manually adding an APN profile with the following settings (copied from my other phone):
I’ve deleted all other APNs, except from the greyed out Chinese ones that can’t be deleted (what are these???) and have selected the newly made APN. Everything works fine now. Datawise that is, because the phone still shows Vodafone NL in the statusbar, even though I’m in Italy right now and connected to the Vodafone IT network. But that’s a small glitch, I’m happy to have a working data connection again.
@Developement team: what are these mysterious Chinese APNs?
No Vodafone but 2 APN for hollandsnieuwe, they make use of the Vodafone network. The type 2 works for me and has slight differences with the vodafone APN. I don’t know where the Sphone Peleophone (Israel) and ctnet and ctwap (China) comes from. The first was default selected en obviously didn’t work. I was able tot delete all APN except the 2 Chines one, the were grayed out and can’t be adjusted or removed.
I tried to use an other Vodafone physical sim card with another phone number in my Fairphone 6. Same result.
I installed my esim on a Pixel 5 with /e/OS 3.7.2, same result.
Before was my esim on a Pixel 8 with Google Android, it gave only 1 APN of Vodafone (works). Also other esims with the same Vodafone contract works on this Pixel 8.
On the Pixel 5 (with /e/OS) I normally have a Swisscom sim. This results in only one APN of Swisscom as you would expect.
So, I don’t know if this is a Vodafone or a /e/OS problem (or the combination of both). I don’t know why also abroad only vodafone NL is displayed but that is minor to having no connection at all.
Does someone have a clue whether this is a Vodafone or /e/OS problem/bug? I expect it to be a /e/OS (or AOSP) bug.
You certainly have very good evidence to Report an issue. I hope you will go ahead as there will clearly be things to iron out from the AOSP APN changes 2025-26.
I’d very much like to get rid of the two greyed out Chinese APNs, given everything that’s going on in the cyber arena these days… I just want one APN, being the one of my own provider.
