Hopefully this is an easy question! In the Settings, there is a section that says “VPN”. can I connect up mullvad service? or do I have to get their app separately?

Yes, simply use the mullvad app … It will then connect via the vpn-interface of the device (which is what you find in the settings as “VPN”)
The app will ask for permission to use the interface.
When permission is granted, setup completes and after that you find mullvad as one vpn option in your device settings and there you can switch it “always on” - if you want.
(In case you use Advanced Privacy, you will then not be able to use the “hide my ip” module of it because only one app can use the vpn-interface at a time.)
