Can I install the F-Droid app itself straight ahead?

This is definitely a newbie question. I’m used to run an old GApps-free Fairphone which app installer is F-Droid. As I am considering switching to an /e/ Fairphone 3, I find myself both very motivated but knowing almost nothing on the OS.
I read that the /e/ installer somehow ‘shows’ F-Droid apps. But frankly, I’d prefer to just install F-Droid and go on.
Do I understand correctly that it is possible to download the F-Droid APK (or any other one, for instance Signal…) and install it?

Thank you, and sorry for the obviousness of the question!!
