Can you manually update /e/OS without loosing the data on the phone?

Thanks @mihi for this information, I didn’t think that switching to the community version would do this on a Pixel 5 redfin.
Does it only erase application data or does it also erase the applications?
If it deletes the apps, I think it would be preferable to do a clean update rather than a dirty upgrade.

Factory-reset (format /data) will erase all user modifications

You probably wanted to say clean install rather than dirty upgrade…
Because switching from “Official” to “Community” is reputed to ask for a factory-reset.

Yes that’s what I want to say

@mihi, @piero
Will it be possible to “lock the bootlaoder” at the end of the installation of the community version?

If you check the last steps of the installtion guide you will see a diclaimer which says that it can’t be locked on community.

Written on a redfin with community

Oups! I’ve just seen that on the redfin installation guide:
Warning: The bootloader is lockable in official builds only. The procedure to lock the bootloader will not work on community builds.

I was able to manually upgrade my OP6 from Android 13 to Android 15. Just downloaded the latest e/os image and recovery, booted into recovery and adb sideloaded the A15 image to the phone. All apps and user data remained after the update!

Same for me Android 13 to 15 on mi 10T with
adb sideload e-3.1.1-a15-20250829521751-community-apollon.zip
after boot into recovery

“Local update” offers a degree of protection.

We see that System updater is capable of “Update Recovery”.

This is not so hard as the main ROM does contain e-Recovery.

From install pages we experience

  • Flash e-Recovery
  • from e-Recovery sideload ROM.

However “Local update” with Update Recovery will attempt to flash both e-Recovery plus system.
