Cannot recover Whatsapp backup (no access to google account)

I’m installing /e/OS into my Fairphone. Unfortunately, I’m forced to use WhatsApp. When I install it, I try to recover the backup that I have stored in a google account, from my previous Android installation. But it’m not able to do it.

When I try to connect WhatsApp with the google account, Micro-G appears and asks me permission to log in. I accept, and a screen appears to choose an account, but the list is empty. I’m only able to add a new account, but if I try it, it says that it’s already present in the device.

Any clue of why does is account not showing in the authentication screen? I have installed other apps and been able to login in them from this same account, but not with WhatsApp.

It’s quite important for me to recover the messajes and pictures stored in this backup. I could try to recover them manually if I could download this backup from Google Drive, but neither do I know how to download it.

Not my subject but I am sure the (slightly complicated) method was described on the forum :magnifying_glass_tilted_left:

Just had the same problem. I removed the Google account from MicroG, and re-added it through WhatsApp this time. It took a few tries because on the first tries, WA did not succeed to entirely add the Google account to microG, apparently and the funnel ended with an error.

I tried installing the app both from App Lounge and Aurora Store, and I tried different ways of handling my 2FA, not sure what had some impact and what did not… but eventually I managed to re-add my account like this, and WA was able to find my backup. Only lost a couple of days which is (much) better than nothing.
