don’t expect any Samsung device running any alternative OS be voLTE capable.
the feature is proprietary.
my best advise is to buy a second hands Fairphone 3 (100-200 €)
or any other device voLTE capable.
Sad to hear, but thanks for a fast answer, if you come up with another way around the problem would be great to. I guess I will need to look for a Fairphone then.
@ephoneh Is your phone an official Murena device, i.e., bought directly from Murena with official ROM? Then maybe this suggestion from the thread may apply:
Still, I guess that you need a fast solution, so looking for a VoLTE-capable phone running a custom ROM is probably the only viable path. (My 2 cents: When choosing one, consider also how long it will get updates.)
There is a wiki list with known VoLTE compatibilities where /e/OS users contribute their experience (everyone can edit it):
I guess many more then me will need this info, now, or soon.
I looked in to the github links, but I’m not exactly a hacker so I would need some more guidence..
I also saw that there is some forks on their projects, even one that was updated quite recently.
But how do I make that stuff work?
How do I install it, will it even work? Can it brick the phone?
What version and fork is the best in that case? And is it safe? Somewhat opsec safe too?
I guess someone that understands code and mobile network needs to look in to it, that’s way out of my knowlege base.
Or better yet, those linkes gave me hope for /e/ to actually be able to incorporate this in an offical update. And be even more selfsufficient from the mainstreams crackdown on our privacy, and be able to take back the control and freedom to us, the people.
Unfortunately, I would also have to look into this, and I am not sure whether I would come up with a solution.
@Manoj Can you ask the developers whether VoLTE support for Samsung Galaxy devices is worked upon? As this may be relevant for several users, you may publish the response in the current weekly development update thread.
Buy another more recent phone from another manufacturer (Sony?!). I liked a lot the Samsung S and Note series of phones and owned many-many but I sold them long ago since there is no VoLTE support for them on custom ROMs. I still have a S9+ that is used very rarely, but here 2G is still going to be used for many years so it’s not quite so bad.
To summarise for you: it seems some people have looked into reverse-engineering the VoLTE code for Samsungs (which is proprietary, as opposed to other mobile brands), but as far as I can tell, no real progress has been made in the last 4-5 years, so I wouldn’t hold my breath it will “take off” any time soon.
If you are technically inclined (i.e. a mobile app developer), there is enough information outthere to allow you to compile the right modules and try the custom code yourself (and maybe even improve it).
If you are not a mobile app developer and really not into tinkering with mobile apps’ development, you will most likely end up doing what I did - move away from Samsungs altogether and buy another brand.
I ended up buying a Google phone due to its wide supportability on /e/OS (and not being from Europe, I couldn’t go for a Fairphone anyway).
However, the problem is Google has another issue if you want 2 sim cards - its dual-sim phones have a weird hardware setup which means LIneageOS can only do VoLTE off the first sim (and /e/OS being based on Lineage OS, has exactly the same problem).
But since you are based in Europe, your choice or hardware is wider than mine, and you can even buy a phone directly from Murena (guaranteed support).
Good luck with your /e/OS journey - all things considered, it’s an awesome mobile phone OS.
