One of my guitar students asks me to use Messenger (Jitsi doesnt work, due to ‘route’ for/from servers in our mountains) to try a video calling. Well…
I think he was talking about ‘historical’ Messenger, wich is FB’s one. Do you know a ‘clean’ (privacy) client, in the /e/Apps ? There’s a lot of apps while looking for with ‘Messenger’ in Apps’ search engine… (and none in F-Droid, just Messenger bypasser).
Obviously, I will use it in Shelter, with just one email address in my /e/phone #privacyparanoid
Since you seen to want only a way to communicate and cannot use Jitsi (self hosted or not), I would go with Jami (once known as Ring).
Features:
Runs on Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android
There’s no need to register - you create an account on your own device
The communication is routed through the backbones without a centralized routed server (of course, there must be a bootstrap server to route the packages) meaning your data goes direct to your contact device
Text messages
Audio calls
Video calls
Video conferences
Screen sharing
You can both, you and your student, install it on your devices, create your own account to use it and send the let’s call it ID to each other. Once you do, you have each other’s contact and you won’t have to do it again, just use it.
It pretty much assembles a video call like in WhatsApp, for instance, but with much better results. And I say this because I’m from Brazil and Internet connection here is not first class.
He use Messenger and want to try it. I don’t really expect a best result than with Jitsi, but I have to try, first. For others, WhatsApp is the ‘less worst’ solution… Can you imagine ? The (very bad) sound comes before the video, about half a second !
‘Covided’ music lessons are pretty difficult with such a bad network…
whatsapp is awful
I use Matrix / Riot for chat and audio/video calls with my family. Much, much better.
Since it’s my own self hosted server, I’m also using the Mautrix WhatsApp Bridge. I
It allows me to use WhatsApp within the Matrix / Riot by using a bot. And there’s a solution for FB Messenger too: https://matrix.org/bridges/#facebook-messenger
I’m not sure if you can use it all without self hosting.
