CMF Phone 1 fingerprint scanner freeze

I am new to de-Googled phones, the CMF Phone 1, and /e/OS. It has been a month since I made the move, and I am extremely happy so far!

One issue I have come across, however, is that sometimes when trying to unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner (embedded in the screen), the screen freezes and the device becomes inoperable. The only way to resolve this is to do a hard boot. After the reboot, all is well.

I think the fingerprint scanner is a bit fiddly, certainly not an issue related to /e/OS per se, but I wonder if any other CMFP1 users have experienced this, or if Murena is aware of it?

If anyone has any experience or advice they’d like to share, I’d appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for reading!

Hi @GrizzleBeard,

Welcome to the community.
I experienced the same during the initial enrollment of my fingerprint for unlocking.
After that, it has been working so far.
My CMF Phone 1 has a screen protector. My assumption was that this made it more difficult to read my fingerprint and that was what caused the freeze.

Hi
Having same problem on 3.1.1 but seems resolved on 3.1.4

I am also on 3.1.4.
This issue occurred 2-3 times before I applied my screen protector, and has happened once since I started using it (hence this thread).

I have read that the CMFP1 fingerprint sensor is not considered one of the phone’s strong points. In my admittedly limited experience, most of my tech issues are caused by user error, so I wonder if I am pressing wrong, tapping too many times, or half-pressing in a way that causes the sensor screen to glitch/freeze.

It has only happened a few times, and not a major issue. I am mainly curious to know if there is any way of regaining control of the device without the need for a hard reboot. I’m always nervous I might do some damage/lose data.

Hi, I am also a month in ^^ It hangs for me too, and it’s an occasional issue that’s more likely to happen the more I attempt to scan my fingerprint too quickly. Even the update (from 3.1.1) to 3.1.4 did not fix the issue for me.

I especially noticed it when I allowed tap to wake, which I expected the phone to turn on in two taps, but instead turns it on in one tap. As a result, while I’m strolling, I am unaware that my pocketed phone has turned on and it keeps triggering the fingerprint sensor until it freezes. I am likely to check it once I arrive at my destination, where I find the phone frozen by then.

So whenever I’m outside I make sure to leave that off. Sometimes, that behavior still triggers even after toggling it several times, so I decide to reboot manually as well to double-check.

I don’t have any technical logs to better describe this, but it’d be nice to report the bug

I agree that attempting to scan the fingerprint too quickly might cause the freeze. And I know what you mean about pocketing the phone. I have found the camera on, as well as the flashlight (which was shining through my trouser pocket for who knows how long before I noticed). I have also taken a few dozen unintended screenshots.

Your right on the fact that attempt too quickly can cause freeze. In the same time i passed on 3.1.4 i change my way of using the fingerrprint scanner and use use veryyyyyy slowly. I’ts realy a weakness of this phone, the rest is prety good for the price in my opinion

My phone freezez sometimes two times pr day now. This is using the Bliss launcher as well as other launchers. Its been going on since day 1. Sure hope there’s a fix coming.

Got some freeze but it’s rare. Fingerprint scanner seems not working anymore even when erase and restart scan. Boring. Gonna reinstall Nothing CMF official ROM when have time to see if it’s a E/OS problem or material.

Noice that when you disable any fingerprint, code, scheme to unlock the phone and let it without locking option, the screen wake up alone every 30 seconds. Settings to extinction of the screen is set to 30 seconds. So i’ve got 30 sec black screen, 30 sec screen on, 30 sec black screen and so and so…

Hope, as oversatured colors, this will be fixed soon

Ok, so right after this post (1 month ago), I switched the refresh rate to 120hz. This has been up before regarding the freeze issue (60 vs 120 hz), so I figured I’d give it a try. I haven’t had 1 single freeze since (I’m using KISS launcher).

Can’t explain it at all, since I’m not tech-savy, but empirically this has weight in my book, as a possible solution. I have not made any other changes to my system.

Thanks for your attention.

I disabled the fingerprint, and I don’t have any issues with freezing since (like a week or two). I’m going to test this too.

Got some freeze when un 60Hz and also with 120. Disabled the fingerprint scanner but, as for oversatured colors, not realy satisfy for an officialy supported phone. Except also caméra résolution not fixed all the rest is ok an happy with. Bank app problem not a bit deal

As Martin4 suggested, I also switched to 120hz, and while the touch response seems improved overall, I did get one freeze so far.

On a related note, I live in an extremely dry climate, and the drier my fingertips are, the less likely the reader is to identify the prints. I read somewhere that wiping a finger on the side of your nose or other greasy facial area can assist with unlocking the phone when using the fingerprint reader. It is gross, but it works the first time, every time (hopefully, no one is watching when you do it)!

It’s strange but effectively it work :joy:

Im down to one freeze every 3rd or 4th day, which is a huge improvement, but obviously still not there yet.

I can confirm the finger-nose hack😁
