Default mail app drains the battery

After updating my phone (FP6) to the latest build 3.1.2 of september, that was available for a short period of time to fix another issue of 3.1.2 I now notice that the mail app drains my battery. Is that a known issue?

Have you cleared it’s cache after the update? (And the caches of all the other apps?)

Have you switched off the cyclic background polling for modern IMAP servers? Modern IMAP servers inform you immediately about new messages by sending a push notification. There’s no need at all to poll them every few minutes but this is the default.

How much is in your inbox? An inbox full of already read messages leads in combination with cyclic polling to a lot of senseless network traffic (because all the stuff is transferred again and again to the client side) and network traffic is always accu consuming. So the best way is to an always empty inbox.

Polling was set to every 15 mins, there are no emails in the mailbox since I am not using murena .io mail, instead I use proton so there is no other mailbox connected other than the murena one. I reset the polling to no polling. Will see if that sorts out the battery draining. so far the draining is already a lot less, thanks.

Check if receiving a message works if you stop polling. This depends on the server. Send a message to yourself. You should receive it within seconds.

Yes it does work without polling; a bit slow depending on the source of the email being sent but it works, so I will keep it like this then. Thanks.

there’s a very old bug entry on this. I too set polling to wide intervals long ago, but I wonder how many users are affected by upstream interval changes.
