Do I need Nextcloud for my e/OS/ phone to work?

Hello,

I’m have been using eCloud for a year now and I’m quite glad. When I installed it, it was advised to use a Nextcloud to sync docs. I’m coming to the period when I have to pay Nextcloud for the next year… but wonder if it’s really useful to have Nextcloud. My Nextcloud is 10Go and my ecloud is 20Go… What’s the difference?

Isn’t ecloud connected directly to my phone?
If I upload a doc on ecloud wouldn’t it be synced to my phone?

Thanks again. Not a techie, and I don’t see the need of a nextcloud if I have an ecloud… Am I right?
Thanks.

Chris

I am not a 100% sure whether I understand well your context, but…

  • you do not need any cloud for /e/ to work properly.
  • if you have an /e/cloud, all you data (such as contacts, calendars, photos) could be synced (if you have that enabled) on /e/cloud as a kind of backup solution. /e/cloud is the name that is used for the cloud solution within the /e/ ecosystem. But technically /e/ cloud is nothing else but a slightly adapted version of the open source cloud software from nextcloud.com.

If you have another, separate Nextcloud that you pay for (a part from /e/cloud), depending of what you use it for, you might not need both.

Thanks for your quick answer. That answers my question.

I asked because I don’t think I master the syncing of docs between my Mac and my ephone…
For example, earlier today, to test it, I uploaded a music file on my ecloud on my Mac. And it doesn’t appear on my phone… How do I sync those two? Somebody told me it was done automatically, but apparently not so.
I get that the sync from ephone to PC works, but I don’t know how to do it from PC to ephone.

Thanks again.

I would guess (can not be sure, because your description is very vague) that it has to do with the directories, that are synced. You could try as a first step to setup syncing files from the ephone to PC (ephone → ecloud → PC). That way you can see, which directories are synced which gives you information which directories can be used to also sync in the other direction.

I don’t understand hahahahaha

What I actually want is simple

For example, if I want to add a contact to my ephone, I want this contact to appear on my eCloud, and vice versa.
Same for the music and pictures. I just tested with a piece of music: I uploaded it on my eCloud and it doesn’t appear on my ephone… same for contacts, and some pictures do appear, some don’t… I don’t understand why :frowning:

Thanks again.

Hi again.
From your computer you could use a browser and access https://ecloud.global/
When you login to your account (e-email address + password) you can access your /e/cloud. That’s the place where you can access and modify your calendar, your contacts etc. You could upload as well music to your cloud space.
All this is synced within a few minutes with your phone. This sometimes takes longer. When did you test it?

Thanks.
I do all that you said. But this morning I uploaded on my eCloud a music piece and it doesn’t appear in my music app on ephone.

Well, in this case you just came across a dysfunction of the system. There is a problem with the sync between the cloud and the device (a bug) that has been identified and the team is working on (Problem with synchronisation (#1772) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab). I am afraid you need to be patient.
As a workaround - especially for music - I’d suggest you connect you device to you computer via USB cable and you copy your mp3 files to the folder.

When I do that my Mac doesn’t recognize my phone ;-(

But thanks for your answers

I am not a Mac user, sorry. Your /e/phone does not have a SD-card slot by any chance?

Yes it does. it’s a Fairphone 3.

Does the problem you talked about include imported contacts not being uploaded on ecloud?

Well, copy the music on an SD-card and plug it in your phone.
Or, maybe this helps: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/transfer-android-mac-3683573/

To be honest, I don’t know. quite some time ago I had problems with non-synced contacts, but recently not anymore. I’d suggest you just check newly introduced contacts whether you have them both - in your cloud (browser) and on your device…

That’s the problem, nothing appears in my cloud browser… I introduced a new one on eCloud, and it showed on the ephone, but none of the ephone are on my ecloud… and I tried to upload a VCF file but to no avail… :frowning:

I am having a similar synching problem. When I upload documents to my ecloud via desktop browser it takes a long time for them to appear on my phone (or at worst doesn’t appear). Yesterday I uploaded some documents, they still are not appearing on my phone (an FP3). Haven’t had the opportunity to have a closer look yet.

I use the NextCloud Synchronization client app to sync files
