Fairphone 6 native mail app giving network error setting up proton mail

Hi all,

Just got fairphone 6 and I’m trying to connect my proton mail account with the native mail app on the device and it finds my account but then gives me a network error after putting in my password:

“ Checking incoming server settings failed? Network error “.

I saw in another post people were having a similar issue with outlook. I installed the proton app and that has worked. But I’m just wondering if anyone knows the fix for this so I don’t have to take up space on my phone with another app since the native mail app can’t be deleted–as far as I know.

Are you running eOS or the Fairphone factory OS?

Are you connected to the internet on the phone?

It may be the case that Proton Mail requires Using Proton Mail on Android | Proton in their support topic they say

Proton Mail and third-party email apps
Proton Mail does not integrate with third-party email clients on Android. These apps cannot perform the encryption and decryption processes required to keep your messages secure.

In years past there was talk of a Proton mail “bridge”. You could :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Search the forum for Proton or Proton + bridge.

With two mail apps, you can ensure no account is linked to native Mail app but also be sure to untoggle Mail sync in Settings > Accounts.

I suggest that you must ensure the native Mail app is inactive before considering [HOWTO] Uninstall default Apps

Hi ghostXgrrl, I have proton mail and just waiting for my first FP6 with e/OS. I thought about what You said and in my opinion it would be against the whole idea of protonmail account to access it from any 3rd party email management software. I will use protonmail app for a reason! Proton gives you 100% end to end encryption if emailing another proton user and if not sending your message to protonmail, still you get an option to send encrypted email providing the recepient with a password you create to access the link you send - and they actually access proton domain to read the message. You will lose that main, core benefit of protonmail if manage to access it via any other mail app. That is my take on it and You will do whatever suits You best but just wanted to bring it to your kind attention :slight_smile:

if you have Advanced Privacy hide-IP feature enabled - disable that, proton could penalize Tor traffic

I saw in another post people were having a similar issue with outlook.

for whatever reason I follow up on Outlook errors and the problems are years in the past and the default is: things should work, if not - bug

E/OS from Murena. And Yes I connected to my wifi.

Thank you everyone for bring to my attention that it’s Proton protecting my privacy. I will look into possibly deleting the native phone mail app. I don’t have any desire to use it really if there is a way to delete it.

I also failed to use my proton account in the default mail app in e/os. I thought its maybe a security feature of proton and now I am just using both apps.

Gmail and Outlook mailaccounts work pretty well in the default app, though. Outlook is a bit trickyer since you have to look for the correct imap and smtp settings yourself.
