Fairphone 6 – no charging detection (USB-C / hardware or /e/OS issue?)

My Fairphone 6 running /e/OS v4.0 stopped charging suddenly today.
It was working normally yesterday.
Symptoms:
No charging indication at all when plugging in (no icon, no vibration, nothing)
No response even when the phone is powered off
Tried multiple cables and chargers (all work with other devices)
Restarting the phone did not help
Battery is currently around 35%
There was no drop, impact, or visible damage before this happened.
Could this be related to /e/OS or a software issue, or is it more likely a hardware problem (USB-C port / charging module)?

Try removing the accu, count to ten and put it back again. This has been a typical issue on the FP3.

Thank you for your answer. I tried but unfortunately the fairphone still doesn’t charge. I have absolutely no idea what’s the issue since it was working perfectly well until then.

I also performed a few tests using chargers with built-in power displays:

  • One charger shows a power draw of less than 1 W when the Fairphone is connected.
  • Another charger displays the message: “Circuit protection enabled. Please unplug and replug the device.”

So the phone appears to be detected electrically by the chargers? but charging never actually starts.

I have no idea what to do.

Have you been very low? Under 5%? This was the reason on the FP3, sometimes you couldn’t charge then, you had to pull the accu.

No, I’m still around 15%. The battery seems to be working normally and discharging normally, but it’s not possible to charge it.

Try a larger wattage charger. Sometimes if the current demand (load) it to high for the charger it shuts down.

Thank you for your answer. I tried but unfortunately it still doesn’t charge. I think the issue comes from the USB port, or maybe the battery? But not really sure. All looks clean and undamaged though, when I checked.

Also try to blow out the port with air from the compressor at work or a service station. Do not use too much pressure and no not put anything metal in the port or you are asking for trouble as you can short the battery.

Have you tried charging also when the device was completely switched off so that no software is between?

Yes, I already tried charging with the device completely switched off, but there is no reaction at all, no LED, no vibration, nothing. I also tried plugging it in with the battery removed, but still nothing.

Thanks for the tip. I already carefully cleaned and blew on the USB module when I removed it, and it looked clean and undamaged. But I’ll try blowing it out with compressed air just to be sure.

I have replaced the USB module, but it still won’t charge. Could it be the battery itself, or could it be related to the v4.0 update? Has anyone else experienced this kind of issue, could it be linked? I’m desperate and don’t know what to do anymore. Thank you in advance for any help.

It’s a long shot, but You seem to be quite resourceful, wouldn’t You have an external universal charger where you put the battery into some spring-held space, adjust charging contacts and charge it externally (out of phone) - to see if the battery itself will charge? That would rule out the that element!

That’s a great idea! I didn’t think of that. I’ll try to find a universal battery charger. That would definitely help rule out the battery as the cause! Thank you very much for your answer

I had this experience, but on reverse: before /e/OS 4.0 I had this problem, and 4.0 solved it. In my case, charging with a fast charger resulted in no charging at all, while slow chargers or PC usb ports were working better.

Try going to Settings>Battery>Charging speed and set Slow instead of Fast. In my case, when I set it to slow it finally stopped having problems, and was charging with any charger, albeis slower.

Thank you for your answer. So it could be a problem with /e/OS? I tried the slow charging setting but unfortunately it didn’t change anything. I only turned on the phone to try this and I’m now down to 3%..

In my case it was, but of course it’s not to be excluded that it could be a hardware fault. I suggested you to check the charging speed setting because it took me a lot to find it was the culprit, and hopefully it could have been the same on your phone.

Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s really helpful to know this is a known issue with /e/OS 4.0. Even though it didn’t work for me, it gives me a little hope that it could be software related. But well, I still don’t know.

I can’t send it in for repair right now since I’m out of Europe now, this breakdown really came at the worst time for me (although there’s never a good time for a breakdown, haha). I’m still hoping to find a solution, so if anyone else has experienced this or has any idea, I’d be very grateful

You could try a rool back to 3.7 to prove it, How did you conclude it was the eOS?

That’s a good idea, but unfortunately I can’t as my battery is down to 3%. Also I didn’t conclude it was /e/OS for sure, it’s just one of the possibilities. But I replaced the USB module and it didn’t fix anything, which could point either to software or to a deeper hardware issue like the motherboard? I honestly don’t know
