I finally can afford some time to fully back-up my phone in order to try a manual update.
My FP3 is stuck on the last OTA update that was available for me (A13 community, v3.0.4).
I know that usually we should be able to update manually. But:
Now that I have the time to do so, the Community build is no longer listed officially. Should I still try to update now, or should I wait the Official build to be available on A15 and do a clean install (which I may do in any way)? In the later case, the question is also “do you think we can expect the Official A15 build any time soon?”
If it can still be advised to update now, could you hint me back to the best process to follow?
Given that Community builds are no longer listed, how should I find the correct link?
I would like to try to update/upgrade first, and only if it doesn’t work well will I do a clean install. Last time I did a manual upgrade was long ago, so a detailed process would be great.
In my case, the starting point was official and a locked bootloader. If you are on community and have an unlocked bootloader, this should not make a difference here (it should actually keep things simpler).
Thank you, I might try this (unless someone else advises advises otherwise).
On my side, I indeed have an unlocked bootloader, but yes it should make things easier.
Just a question:
When you say this, do you think it is worth that I try a local update in my case? Any risks linked to this?
Of course I cannot predict how it will turn out, but from my memory, both these attempts (A14 first, then A15) failed like instantly – like the device was refusing it categorically without even starting the process. I would give it a try, perhaps the fact that you are already starting on community makes the device more willing.
Seems a very reasonable approach. A point in favour of Local update is that (with Update recovery also selected) you hope to change recovery and system simultaneously, better chance of success, especially with Fairphone than say adb sideload.
Alternatively for a clean install to find community ROMs just edit the url of the published official source. So published
I still wanted to try updating now, given that I had backed up everything already, and because local update didn’t seem a big deal. I can do the same later on with A16 if available.
So I went for local update, and it worked like a charm (a bit more than 5 minutes for the first reboot, then as usual). Thank you!
Good to read of another successful approach. Straight from 13 to 15 or did you need to go 13 → 14 → 15 ? Actually, I might try this myself should A16 for the FP3 materialize.
Straight from A13.
I just added my feedback there: Feedback for v3.5 - #123 by 16NoCo (although not with much details: I didn’t write down the exact build name before updating).
I have spare FP3. I think about it to use it as backup for my daily driver, if that one fails to still have access to my import apps like banking, authentification etc.
What is the recommended way to get on v3.5 (communnity) from scratch with Fairphone default OS?
