FP6 black screen - seems to be off - impossible to use

Hi all,

Yesterday my FP6 (bought with Murena e/OS/ from Fairphone and in version 3.4 official) was tethering my mobile connection to my computer. Connected on power, charge limit to 85%, screen was off.

Suddenly, no more internet on my computer. I would say it was 1 hour after start working.

I push on any button of FP6, the screen doesn’t bright. I tried to push on power button, no reaction. I pushed on power button for 30s, maybe FP6 was on and I just wanted to shut it down. After that, tried to restart the phone : no reaction.

I have powered the phone, no LED, nothing to see that phone is charging or not.

I have connected the phone to my computer and checked USB ports : nothing, no phone detected.

I tried to removed SIM and data cards, no change.

I have left the phone during all night, this morning, same behaviour.

I tried to call my phone number : answering machine so I suppose the phone is off.

I tried again to push on power button, the screen is still off, no Murena logo, nothing.

I tried VOL DOWN + POWER ON and VOL UP + POWER ON : phone does nothing.

Do you have an idea ?

Oh, phone was ordered on june 2025.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks for your help !

I have just removed the battery. I am not at home and I had to find a Torx T5 somewhere

Do you know that if the phone should start up if I connect power to the phone without the battery inside ? Like some laptops…

I will wait few hours before put the battery back in the phone. To be sure phone is out of energy. Is it better ?

This might help to identify an obscure software fail.

Mainly replace battery after 10 minutes might help to separate

  • failed motherboard (or other serious)
  • failed display (if any LED shows)
  • … or the phone recovers.

Unfortunately no Fairphone (from FP1 to the current FP6) has ever allowed that. All Fairphones require the battery to start up.

Thanks to your messages :folded_hands:

So I have plugged back the battery in place.

Power On, no reaction.

Plugged in the power on the phone, no reaction.

Tried to pushed again Power On, nothing.

The screen is still dark, no light, no bright. I have plugged another equipment on the charger, it is charging correctly. So problem is not the charger nor the cable.

Another idea ?

After putting it in again, try to charge it for a bit. I had with FP3 once such an issue. Don’t remember the details how I got it working again but it was with pulling out battery, etc.

I forgot: Re-seat screen connector

As the phone was open, I want to check if the USB-C module was right in place (as it a spare part we can replace if needed). In my mind, it could be a cause that phone is not charging and so, not booting.

I have remove the plate at the bottom with speaker, the USB-C connector is under that module. Nothing strange. The connector of USB-C is correctly plugged in…

But I have seen this below. Two of the three small cables seems to be crushed. The white one and the black one. Someone knows utility of these small cables ? The phone comes like that from Fairphone. Do you think it is normal ?

I have removed the battery for 2 hours. Plugged in back and check all small connectors. Even for USB-C. Everything seems ok excepted small cables at the bottom right of the phone that seems to be crushed.

I opened a ticket on Fairphone Support to have more explanations. Hope they will not answer in 6 weeks cause it is my daily phone and I need it to connect to internet. I am out of my country for the moment and it was my link with family. I’m not happy. The phone is new. And price is not so cheap… When I see that small cables. I’m really, really disappointed.

If you CAN, use the Chat at support.fairphone.com on working days between 10 and 12 am Amsterdam time.

Looks like the issue that people have been having since the FP6 introduction. Sometimes charging permanently kills the FP6 and the only way to solve it is to get it repaired by Fairphone.

Contact via chat this morning with Blake. He asked me to send back the FP6 under warranty, repair center seems to be in France. Process should take around 14 days, beginning with sending.

So not so nice for me cause sending should be done from Belgium in my case and I am currently out of the country. So more few days without phone.

I really hope that Fairphone will provide more information what is causing this issue, a bad batch or firmware/software. This issue seems to happen pretty often and it makes me nervous about charging my FP6.

Hello,
I had same issue with my FP4.
I replaced display and battery but no change.
My last hope is to send it to a repair shop.
Can you share me contact you have?
Thanks

Hello @jbcau ,

I have no contact. I went on this site here and followed instructions. At the end, I had to describe my problem and then a ticket was created.

Next day, I asked to chat bot here to chat with a collaborator. At 10:00 AM (cause people are behind their screen between 10 and 12:00).

During that chat, a man called Blake explained me the process to send back the phone which is under warranty.

Hope it will help you.

Phone sent on Wednesday last week on repair via UPS and delivered today.

One week and a half.

Wait now to return back home to see if my FP6 is now functional.

Phobe is working but I don’t know exactly what was the trouble.

They have made an upgrade software but my phone is now in 3.3-a15 official…

It was in 3.4 when sent in warranty.

Do you think I can upgrade from 3.3 directly to 3.5 ? Or I have to install 3.4 before going to 3.5 ?

The updates are not incremental each update is the complete system (and more) so if you see 3.5 offered on Updater just install it if you want to.
