Fresh Install of /e/OS Results in Two Camera Apps

Hello. New /e/OS use here. I just flashed most recent image/version to my phone for first time yesterday. When I was done and rebooted, I seem to have ended up with two Camera apps. I only need one. Is there a way to determine which one is the one I should keep vs. discard?

I assume I can discard either one of them at all…

Sure somebody will know the answer, but it doesn’t help that they are both just called “Camera”, so I have no idea what the difference is!

Let me guess … you are both using a Fairphone (4 or 5), right?

If it’s one of these, Murena only succeeded a few months ago to make Fairphone’s own camera app work on /e/OS, so that’s (probably) why there are two camera apps on your devices. Making this possible was a wish by many /e/OS users on Fairphones. You might still keep both for a while and find out which one you prefer.

/e/OS default camera app (its app icon has a black camera lens surrounded by a light grey ring and a dark grey background with a tiny red dot in its top right corner) is a fork of Open Camera, a “one size fits all” approach, so most likely the Fairphone camera app will deliver better results.

Ah, thank you - so the one without the red dot is the Fairphone one; will give it a try …

My phone is a Moto G7 with a new/first install of /e/OS as of yesterday. One of the apps package is noted as com.motorola.camera2, and the other is foundation.e.camera, so it seems clear to me (now) what is going on.

But, frankly, I am surprised that the stock Motorola camera app survived the partition(s) wipe(s) that occurred as part of the new OS flash/installation process. It apparently is embedded in the phone hardware/firmware itself.

Of course there may be another explanation?

Until now I was thinking the Fairphones were the first phones Murena were giving their native camera apps, but perhaps I am mistaken there. Perhaps another Moto user can clarifiy if the Moto G7 enjoyed the same extra service from Murena’s side.

Indeed @urs_lesse, it is there on purpose on certain Moto, (+ maybe other?) including ocean where we get Version 7.2.91.68-denali
com.motorola.camera2

Two additional remarks.
You can

  • hide apps (at least in certain launchers, not sure if it is possible in Bliss)
  • rename apps (e.g. ‘FP camera’)

Yeah, I’ll stick with the /e/ camera app and tuck the Motorola version away in a folder of unused apps or hide it. Since it seems embedded in the system I am too scared to delete it! lol…same with FM Radio (com.android.fmradio) app…WTH!?..why need/have so many permissions that can’t be disallowed? I guess that’s a topic for another thread, though…
