From 3.7.3 A15 to 4.3 A16 on FP6

Hello,

I have questions for a FP6 bought from Fairphone with /e/OS pre-installed and which so far has always been updated exclusively OTA from the /e/OS updater (“Settings, System updates”) on the phone (with the “See all available updates” option enabled).
Currently that FP6 is on official 3.7.3 A15 and no matter how many times the refresh button is hit on the updater, the only available update which I can see is 4.0 A15.
Here /e/OS official FP6 download I can see that 4.0 was the last for A15 and 4.1.1 was the first for A16.

- After updating to 4.0 A15 will other higher 4.x A16 versions become available in the updater? To put it in another way, is 4.0 A15 mandatorily needed before being able to see higher 4.x A16 versions available in the updater on the phone? The fact of having 4.0 mandatory might make sense because of the passage from one major version to another (3.x to 4.x)?
- In case 4.0 A15 is mandatory, after updating to 4.0 A15 I’d like to be able to directly pass to 4.3 A16, would this be possible or there will be other mandatory update steps in-between?

Thanks

The OTA Upgrade has a fixed path. So yes you must have 4.0-a15 in order to be offered 4.1-a16.

After this make sure the updater is set to show all available updates in order to jump to latest.

Hi aibd,

Thanks for the info.

I went from 3.7.3 A15 to 4.0 A15 (because of the fixed path you mentioned) and then to 4.1.1 A16 (I imagine also because of the fixed path you mentioned, like you said here Feedback for v4.3 - #106 by aibd).

Now, with the “See all available updates” option enabled in the updater, I only can see 4.2 A16 and no 4.3 A16 no matter how many times I refresh.

This is similar to what reported here:

I’d like to avoid local update and stick to OTA, also (but not only) because of what reported here:

Could it be that I see only 4.2 A16 and not 4.3 A16, due to the staggered release schedule which might still be ongoing (since 4.3 A16 release was paused and then restarted)?

Is there something else I can do, apart from waiting, in order to go from 4.1.1 A16 to 4.3 A16 via OTA update from the updater?

Thanks

I suppose you might try to “enforce” that switch by Clear storage in the updater app, Power down and start. Maybe one still needs to be patient due to the FP6 4.3 release being withdrawn for several days.

Hmm … clear Storage means clear Storage, clear cache would not have the same effect.

Did that already: I found the Updates system app, cleared the cache (not the data, should I instead also clear the data?), turned the phone off and on again, also waited overnight with phone off and the tried again this morning: 4.3 is not showing up.
Hopefully it’s the paused-and-resumed release we mentioned.
Gonna post also in the 4.3 feedback thread.
Thanks

How about installing v4.2 first and after that going right to v4.3?

Maybe there are dependencies to be solved which only works with v4.2 installed first. Just a guess that might bring you forward.

Hi Mungo,

Thanks for your feedback: indeed I’ll try asking for a “formal” clarification on these eventual dependencies in the 4.3 feedback thread.

Hi aibd,
I noticed you edited your post: I’ll try also clear storage/data asap.

@Nedo please notice that the new documentation does include

When the Updater asks if an update is available, the request contains:

  • the device model (codename) and the version currently installed, which the server needs to find the right update;

So if this included the sense of an enforced update path, this would be different from my previous understanding.

In the event multiple updates are available install of latest would be fine, my previous understanding, I would expect to be unchanged.

Thanks aibd for clarifying/updating the info.
As a side note: apparently you were able to edit a post of yours of three days ago; something which apparently I am not able to do at the moment. Any suggestion on how I could do that as well?

Thx.
(Maybe too) quickly skimmed through it: it’s unlikely I’ll get to the point of a high level in a time frame useful in any way from my own point of view, which a) on one side I’d say it’s completely fair enough but b) on another side it’s a pity because I consider myself quite precise and willing to correct/maintain info and this levels-model currently prevents me from doing so

For the record: clearing the storage for the Updates system app produced no difference.
