I’m in the final stages of moving from iPhone to e/OS on Fairphone 6. Lots of things are going well, but the contacts app has me stumped. I exported my iPhone contacts in a .vcf file, opened them in contacts on Murena Workspace and there they were. Cool. But for the life of me I can’t get them to transfer to the contacts app on my Fairphone. Contacts app remains empty. I have tried lots of things already but no luck.
Hi, yes thanks, I’ve looked through all that but it mentions either migrating to fairphone or migrating to workspace but not transferring/syncing from workspacre to fairphone.
I am new to everything that is not MacOS/iOS and I find im looking at settings and not comprehending. The logic is so different. For example: why can I click synchronise in the accounts and contacts apps and see the arrows turn, but I also see a tiny sync icon with error message in the top left corner, that I can’t get to? And online I can’t find the right info. I am not stupid but feel stupid trying to master this new OS. Sorry for the rant but a bit frustrated.
Solution may lie in Account Manager setting and a WebDav account. I shall study some more. Tips welcome for an adress book app that works on both murena and macOS.
but to establish this: you added the Murena account to the phone via its standard onboarding route: general Android Settings → Accounts - or during the first time setup wizard?
The protocol backing the addressbook is CardDAV, but yes it’s the AccountManager that handles all dav-protocols. But you wouldn’t need to open that manager for things to work, only if you created separate new addressbooks outside the default (named “Contacts”) after the first setup.
Initially I did use the standard onboarding route, but I deleted the workspace + WebDav account by mistake and then re-added the Murena account (not the webdav). So perhaps i accidentally created a new addressbook on my phone that no longer communicates with the addressbook in de murena workspace. Even though their mailaddresses look the same.
Hang on, I just found that the account manager does not sync at all, it’s giving me a HTTP 404- error.
10 frantic minutes later
Got them. There is a acccount synchronisation setting in accounts and it had ignored syncing ‘contacts’. Toggled it by hand and I have my workspace contacts on my phone now. (Incidentally, this is what I always found so hard with non-Mac software: there are multiple locations where you settings can be changed). Thanks for tolerating my ramblings.
No problem, good that you found where the problem was.
Just to reassure you, the standard Murena account logging, either by adding the account in the settings menu or through the OS intial setup wizard, automatically activates sync for all elements: Contacts, Notes, Calendar (and even phone pictures which is an annoyance at the moment because it is not a real bi-directional sync, it actually copies pictures to the server as soon as they are taken without later rec-checking if they have been deleted and thus fills up the “cloud” storage spaces. I forgot what happens on the phone when there is server side modification )
It may take something like 15min (default sync setting) to sync contacts.
When adding the main murena account, it will then add automatically two additional accounts that are contact adressbooks from the murena cloud: the main Contacts one and another one called Webmail that stores all the recipients to which you sent emails with your murena mail.
I am having an interesting sync experience as well!
Thank you for clarifying on the non-bilateral sync. Perhaps it should be described as a backup/upload option, rather than sync as it’s not really an accurate description of what’s happening. A sync should be comparing files both directions and making sure both places are the same. I deleted media from my mobile device, and found they were on the cloud taking up space. (I didn’t even know this was happening, because I added my account but don’t recall enabling the sync.) Sync with the device didn’t get rid of the media files on the cloud either. I had to manually delete them from the cloud, which is really not ideal. I will have to turn off sync entirely until it actually functions as anticipated. Is this something that’s planned at all?
Something else I noticed was that despite Contacts sync being enabled - my contacts aren’t syncing. I can login from a desktop and it doesn’t contain any of the contacts that I have on my mobile device. I have redone the sync from the account settings on my mobile device with no luck. If I go into the settings of the contacts app it doesn’t show the Murena account listed. There seems to be some kind of disconnect here. I’m under the assumption the attempt is to be a global setting, because there is a toggle for the contacts app specifically.
I’m not migrating from iOS and I also find it frustrating to have the same setting located in multiple places too. How do we know how many times we have to specify the same setting, and where? If we have to add the account with each individual app, even when they’re the same flavor, what is the point of having the account section in the device settings? Why not just make us do it in each individual app, then it would be clear settings are separate for each app instead of global.
