Incoming call does not display "phone app" when screen is already on

I just noticed, that incoming calls do not show the “phone app”, you that overlay where you can accept and decline calls. I just then get a notification. So, in order to accept a call, I have to pull the notifications, look for the “incoming call” notification accept the call there. This happens only when the screen is already on. When the screen is off, the overlay appears. I think that is very strange behaviour and I’ve never seen that on any other phone/os. How do I fix that?

Today I installed the latest /e/os update 4.2-a16-20260815662938-official-FP6. However, incoming calls still do not trigger the dailer. Disappointing.

Also, the related issue on gitlab did not get much attention.

Is this option toggled on?:

With my e/OS, the same as with standard android, when the screen is in use and a call comes, then a tile is popping up with the caller details and 2 ‘buttons’ below: to Decline or to Answer… that is a normal action to expect.

Is it different for you?

Check that ‘allow display over other apps’ is toggled ‘on’ in settings.

P.S. If you tap on that incoming call tile it should open your ‘dialler’ O.K.

Good that this issue has been reopened. I experience the same issue on my Fairphone 6 and often have problems picking up a phone call. The ‘display over other apps’ switch is turned on for the telephone app, but doesn’t work apparently. As this is a primary function of a phone this is quite annoying and I hope it will be solved.

Searching for symptoms at AOSP I find

New phone call notifications allowing for ranking importance of incoming calls -...

it is a notification that is expected (not dialer) but I note that the Notification mode may be different when using Gesture navigation and if the phone is in Immersive mode.
