Intermittent MMS send/receive failures on Pixel 8 (e/OS 4.1.1, YouPrice/Orange France)

Hello,

I’m experiencing intermittent MMS issues on my Pixel 8 running e/OS 4.1.1, and I’m trying to determine whether this is an e/OS issue, a carrier compatibility issue, or something specific to my device.

Device

  • Device: Google Pixel 8

  • e/OS version: 4.1.1

  • Physical SIM

  • Carrier: YouPrice (Orange network, France)

  • 4G only (no 5G)

Problem

The issue has been present almost since I started using the phone (about one year ago).

  • SMS always work.

  • Mobile data works normally.

  • MMS sending and receiving are intermittent.

  • Sometimes they work immediately.

  • Sometimes outgoing MMS remain stuck and eventually fail.

  • Incoming MMS appear in the conversation but stay on “Downloading…” indefinitely.

  • Pressing Download again a few minutes later sometimes succeeds.

The problem occurs with both Android and iPhone contacts.

For example:

  • someone sends me a MMS;

  • I immediately receive the notification;

  • I tap Download;

  • it keeps spinning without any error;

  • several minutes later, tapping Download again may finally retrieve the MMS.

Outgoing MMS often fail at the same time.

What I have already tested

  • e/OS Messages.

  • Google Messages (same behaviour).

  • Wi-Fi enabled/disabled.

  • Mobile data enabled/disabled.

  • Reset APNs to default.

  • Original Orange APNs (orange.fr + orange.acte).

  • A unified APN (orange with default,supl,mms).

None of these changed the behaviour.

Additional observations

After installing Google Messages, I noticed several old MMS that had apparently never been downloaded while using the e/OS Messages app.

However, Google Messages also fails to download newly received MMS, so the issue does not appear to be limited to the messaging application.

The phone receives the MMS notification correctly; it is the actual download that intermittently fails.

Carrier

I have already contacted YouPrice and asked them to verify that MMS provisioning on my line is correct.

Questions

Has anyone experienced similar issues with:

  • Pixel 8?

  • e/OS 4.x?

  • Orange France or an Orange MVNO?

Could this be related to the telephony stack or MMS handling in e/OS?

I’m not sure whether this is an e/OS bug, a carrier compatibility issue or something specific to my setup, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

My carrier (YouPrice, Orange network) sent me a different APN configuration than the one automatically configured by the phone. I’m currently testing it and will report back.

Update: I found something interesting. Whenever a MMS download gets stuck, enabling Airplane mode for a few seconds and then disabling it causes the pending MMS to download immediately. This seems to indicate that re-registering to the mobile network restores MMS connectivity.
