Last remaining 3G to be turned off in the UK

I find this all so annoying. Throw away your old phones - we have made sure that they no longer work. Throw away your old computers (if you are Windows users) - they are no longer supported. Also, I am a big fan of radios and find now that the vast majority of my older radios use replaceable batteries whereas the modern ones don’t and are not repairable. I have got a Kobo Ellipsa for Christmas - didn’t need one but, just wanted one! But, discovered that the older models of the Kobos were all repairable with instructions on IFixit and discovered (you guessed it), that all the new models are non repairable with non replaceable batteries. This is why I don’t buy many new gadgets now, have a fairphone and framework laptop!

yeah, the same sh… makes me angry - why are we told that we need all that rubish? Or maybe more important question: why so many of us believe so?

I am not sure that so many people do believe it as used to. Not the ones that I know, here in the UK, where I am. I don’t think as many people are buying gadgets, upgrading their computers or phones. I heard the other day, that worldwide, people are keeping their smartphone for close to 4 years. And the ones I see people with here are mainly much older then that. I know quite a few people that still have iPhone 7’s.

To be fair 3G only devices are pretty old and outdated… I mean you wouldnt wanna use a galaxy S2 nowdays, the s3 had LTE models and s4 was LTE across all models and even that is considered outdated and useless in 2025, the only real pain is for old flip phones that grandpas use, pretty much any phone after 2016-17 supports VOLTE anyways. With windows 11 and PCs its a different story a 7 gen i7 PC still has life left for sure

I can’t claim to know much about telecoms but, prior to the 3G shutdown, if there was a problem with the 4G signal, my phone would drop down to 3G. This would happen more often when I was visiting more rural areas but, still happened occasionally in the small town where I live. Now there is no fallback and I lose a signal altogether, when this happens. As far as I am concerned, the result for me of the 3G shutdown, and the rural area around where I live is a deterioration in the mobile service, with no benefit. My FP5 is 5G but, that doesn’t help if there is no 5G signal. I don’t know if this is a problem in countries other than the UK, in rural areas.

The hoo-ha that certain UK “Smart” Energy meters will stop working is yet to hit the news. No engineers available to change my “sender hub”.
