is there a way to update the recovery from within the recovery? sideload?
yes, you need to use Odin3 or Heimdall in download mode.

). can the system be too new to be booted/processed(?) by the old recovery?
in the meantime i did upgrade the recovery via heimdall and just in case also sideloaded A16 via ADB from the new recovery, but it still fails with the above error message.
Not sure whether this was already there before but now it says at the end of the message:
Reason: init_user0_failed
would there still be a chance to keep my data? –> e.g.: Would “Format cache partition” from the recovery be an option or should this not be done directly after/during an upgrade?

Any hope for A16 on my beloved Essential PH-1 mata? An unofficial but maintained version of it exists for LineageOS (see [ROM][16 QPR2][mata] Unofficial, optimized LineageOS 23.2 - April 8th | XDA Forums ).
“community” /e/ builds generally rely on “official” LineageOS support.
@ronnz98 may try to build “unofficial” /e/ from your linked XDA thread..
Also worked on my OnePlus 11 5G (CPH2451) via ADB after multiple tries on both local and ADB and far too much time with chatGPT. It seems if you just do it enough times and reboot often enough, eventually it will work.
I updated from A14 (3.7.1) to A16 (3.7.3). Do we have a Success! string somewhere?

What’s the status of the Android 16 for the Pixel 7? Most other Pixel devices, including the Pixel 7 Pro, have already received Android 16.
There’s no ETA for this upgrade yet …
The community builds are on Android 16 already, if you’re interested, but they will likely be dropped somewhen on devices which have official builds. Community builds were purged from /e/OS documentation already, but for now they still get built … https://images.ecloud.global/community/panther/
