Magic Earth /Magic Lane

Don’t you want to tell us what Magic Earth’s answer was?

Thank you, it is not so obvious to find thus setting.

OSMAnd (F-Droid) for me :+1:

I think we did not get a response or it was not a positive response. Which is the reason we are actively looking for a replacement.

I am wondering if it’s really the task of eOS to provide a map app. Maybe something like app that suggests several apps would be also an acceptable solution for many users. After all, I use OSMand. I never used the map app provided by eOS.

Well /e/os stands for a userfriendly OS also for people who just wants to buy and start using it. Thats why its necessary to provide a good decided system maps app, so the users just use privacy friendly solutions without the need to make researches.

Speaking of CoMaps, I also want to share my opinion and preferences: while I really like CoMaps’ UI, their “offline first” approach does not work well for me: I often find myself in the situation of exploring different parts of the world, e.g. after watching a documentary or listening to a podcast. But only for exploring and panning around in a particular region of the world, I find it cumbersome that I have to download the corresponding region first - I really miss the online-first approach of Google Maps and Magic Earth.

While I agree that offline scenarios are key in many circumstances, I think that there are smarter than forcing the user to download everything before-the-fact (e.g. combine caching and downloading).

And as already being mentioned by others, the live traffic is important for me, too.

I like travelling as well. Part of my planning includes downloading offline maps all the time. Don’t see the hassle with that.

And it’s more failsafe anyway. An internet connection is always nice to have, but you could find yourself without one anywhere anytime (with the risk varying depending on the place, of course, but it’s never zero).

Maps on paper still exist and also have a certain adventurous charme as a fallback plan, though.

Preferences differ :slightly_smiling_face: I find it useless to download 90 MB of data for whole Tyrol if I just want to know where the city of Telfs is :man_shrugging:t2:

You know phones are not 128mb anymore right

Once you are done wth your trip…

Offline maps > delete what ever city you don’t need anymore.

Free space recovered.

More than the space, the main tradeoff of being off-line first is that the Search function is basically useless if you haven’t already downloaded the region. Try to type ‘Taj Mahal’ in CoMaps (or any offline-first map app): unless you live in India in that same region, you won’t find it.

Admittedly most of the searches one performs are for nearby locations, but it is still an issue imho.

I get your point and mu88’s.

I don’t think anyone would be expecting search to function globally when offline if no maps are available.

With CoMaps you only need to download the World map (49 Mo) and WorldCoasts (8 Mo) once and for all, and then you can search for places offline. Even if the map of the country/city is not downloaded you can still have a look at where the places are. Of course if you need a closer look, or if you need specific points of interest there it asks for you to download the map which makes sense.

(and in all fairness, there are on-going discussions in the CoMaps community to offer a mix of offline and online search + adding more points of interest to the default Worldmap, so the issue is being considered!)

Just want to add that with the latest update bicycle routing (city) has degraded for me sadly. Earlier routes are no longer offered that were there and fine before. Leading to new routes and less good feeling navigating now.

The feature of adding my own blockage areas is still great though and also one why I’ve not used CoMaps to navigate yet.

Regarding online/offline first the way ME handles it is absolutely top! Anyone who doesn’t want online maps can disable it (afair) and for others you just can use the app ootb. For regions i need often, i download them. That’s perfect handling!

A screenshot of the developer version of CoMaps with Live traffic information. Shared today on the CoMaps dev channel.

It currently does not cover the whole world (depends on the availability of the live data sources) + still require some performance optimization, but it is definitely coming soon!

Great and thank you for sharing. I always wonder on how they are planning to finance such a service as the server costs will probably raise by user and could explode?

Not every /e/OS user is familiar with the technical functions about it.

The change from Android should be ‘flowing’ experience, in which the best usable and safest apps are standard, don’t you agree?
