#metoo: Weird notes bug that copies and pastes a word a few lines above

Dear comunity,
I was so glad to stumble across this already closed post:

My notes version is 3.7.4 and its really driving me nuts.
I do daily task lists, very simple. No dashes, no markdown, no nothing. Just words.
Wehn I want to delete a line starting from the end with the backspace ‘key’ (cause the task is done) occasionally the curser jumps a few lines upwards, inserts a word there (one from the line that I just wanted to delete (didn’t copy it before!) and thereby is partly destroying the above line since words get ‘overwritten’ by the pasted word (that can barely come from the clipboard).
Furthermore, I see no ‘undo’ function. This way I regularly lose lines from my lists, which is really nothing that I appreciate regarding a notes app. My simple text editor on Linux or notepad.exe of Windows ist far more reliable. Am I just too stupid to understand some sophisticated built in automation? Anyone else out there having these problems?

Greetings
Ulrich

  • can you reliably reproduce this?
  • does it make a difference if you have connectivity (for sync) at that time?
  • if the note was synced before to the remote or is wholly new?

Happens nearly daily, but found no way to reproduce it yet. Mostly it happens wen deleting a line starting from its end by ‘backspace’.
The notes affected were synced before.
Regarding connectivity I’ll check asap. In any case it happens when online.
Few days ago I’ve installed ‘Nextcloud Notes’ which seems to in fact replace the /e/Notes app.
Same behavior.
Here is one example of today. The non important letters are replaced by ‘+’.

Verkäufe bearbeitem ← started to delete here; the ‘m’ came in ‘automatically’
+++++
++++ ++++++++
++++++++++
++++++++ +++
++++++ ++++++
Fenbearbeite ←- cursor jumped here, inserting ‘bearbeite’ automatically over something that is lost now.

  • do you use another keyboard app then AOSP default?
  • that behaviour doesn’t show in other text fields, e.g. this simple Editor app?

I wonder if you have “ghost touch” events on the screen. I played around with the Notes app and can’t replicate - and would expect more reports if it happens across all users

Just AOSP.
Behavior doesn’t show in other text fields like Browser (Forms), Mail, Messengers (Signal/Telegram/Matrix Clients).
Got some painful experience with ghost touches on several Xperia xz2c devices. Think I can exclude this. Never happened on the current Pixel 4a like that.
But yes, true, more users should see this (else something is wrong with my setup or usage).
Will give Carnet and Joplin a try.

  • do you do parallel editing, where you have the note open on the phone, and in some tab in the browser?

I have noticed this as well. Not just with notes, when trying to enter a reference in the payments of my banking app extra letters get added.

Parallel editing or interference with other NextCloud clients can be excluded. Many times when it happens only the mobile is in use and other devices are switched off and on the mobile only Notes is open.

Update: Same problem with Carnet.
Joplin is fine so far. Test continues.

Final Update: With /e/Notes, NextCloud Notes and Carnet the problem persists.
Joplin is fine and does a good job. This is now the permanent workaround for me.

I wonder if it’s up to being a long text with a bit of markdown to render for this to show up. Can you share a sample .md / .txt where (here’s a pastebin) others can try to reproduce the behaviour?
