Phone screen responds to my pocket, so I have to put it in lockdown. Then to unlock must enter password of course. In order to unlock, I must enter pw twice though. Never occurred to me this could be normal. Been dealing with it for years. Is it expected behavior?

That is quite normal on LineageOS microG, as well, if one enters the password before the pin numbers are questioned and inserted (too quickly, it still loads in the background). At least on my devices.
If I wait after boot until the pins are requested as the “first” data to enter, it only asks for the unlock code once.
