Next Steps - Replacement Of Office Ipad

After Apple withdrawing ADP from uk users, We decided to withdraw from Apple. I may be naive but, I still value privacy, or as much of it as I can easily achieve. Our 2 Murena Fairphone 5’s have now replaced our iPhones and we are very happy with them. But, years of having an office iPad (which I find very useful) means that I would really like to replace it with the Murena Google Pixel. I have checked out reviews of the Google Pixel and think it would be most suitable for this task. These are the apps that I would like to install - Signal (not essential), 2/3 secure browsing options such as LibreWolf, Mullvad Browser (could manage with just browser but, would prefer some different ones as well), Borrowbox (for my local library access) - that is about it really. I will probably play music too - just a small selection of my mp3 collection. I am quite happy with the bliss launcher as I don’t install many apps. I might use Magic Maps on it but, I can use my phone for that.
I did check the info on the forum first before posting but, I wanted ideally to get some really up to date feedback on people’s experiences with e/os on tablets.
Initially, I was just going to buy a tablet from the Murena shop but, they are currently out of stock. So, I was wondering about possibly buying a tablet and installing e/os myself. I would like to get one that is the most compatible / well supported by e/os. And, I am guessing that this would be the pixel but, wondered if there were any others that I could consider.
If any one can give me any pointers about which tablets to consider (pain free installations) and which ones to avoid, that would be really helpful.
I get the general impression that more people are using both fairphones / other phones than tablets.
But, the advice that I got from you with the phones was invaluable so, I am hoping that you can advice me on tablets too.

P.S. - I forgot - I would really prefer to start with a new tablet rather than buy a second hand one. The tablet will get a lot of use so, I wanted one with a large capacity battery that hopefully would last me a good few years.

According to a Reddit forum member, the Samsung Tablet S6 lite is a good choice. There’s an /e/OS build for it, see below. It’s based on Android 14, which is quite new.

Installing /e/OS on this tablet: Installing /e/OS on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Full Tutorial. Unfortunately, the Easy Installer won´t do it for you. So you have do follow the steps provided in the tutorial. But, I assume you want the Easy Installer to do the work for you, as I can understand completely. So that would mean another tablet.

Thanks very much. I watched your video and it was really well explained and demonstrated. I had planned to buy a tablet from Murena but, they have none in stock at the moment. While I have found a Galaxy S6 Tab Lite in stock at PC World, and it is quite inexpensive compared to the Pixel. I like the fact that this tablet has an SD card slot while the Pixel does not.
Did you encounter any issues / problems later on when you started using it or applied updates? I use my tablet every day and really need it to be stable and reliable.

P.S. I really wanted a tablet that I could purchase new, like this one. I had been considering buying the Pixel and installing e/os myself - possibly using the easy installer, if that works for it. Do you think installing e/os on the Pixel would be easier because Murena have chosen this one to sell pre-installed themselves.

Hi there,

I just searched the web for what you desired. I don´t have experience installing /e/OS on the Samsung tablet myself. But I did install phones with /e/OS, both using the Easy Installer and with use of the Platform Tools. I just follow the steps other ones provide and when something doesn’t work, I rely on forums or other sources. It costs time when you first flash a phone or tablet, but it’s really rewarding when you succeed!

To find people using /e/OS on a Samsung tablet, you could search this forum.

This following thread is exactly what you need: Samsung S6 Lite: problem with installation

What I know when flashing Samsung phones with /e/OS is that, after uploading the recovery, you have to press some buttons fast as to avoid booting into the normal Android version again instead of the recovery of the custom ROM. In the video it is referred to as ‘the tricky part’. I didn´t read the thread, but that can be the problem users are facing here.

From what read, there is also an issue with the version of Android installed that is being replaced with e/os. The new ones for sale now come with Android 13 so, I am not sure if this is compatible with the current version of the rom that is available for download?

I suggest you ask one of the members who contribute on the thread. I think you best start with Piero, and ask which stock/standard version is needed for /e/OS to install over it. I also read that you use the /e/OS recovery (which installs the OS) instead of other recoveries.

Latest Samsung OS i found is based on android 13 and security patch from 2024-11-01 so it is fully compatible with /e/
there will be no problem to install current /e/OS version 2.8 that is based on android 14 for this device with 2025-01-01 security patch.

Thanks for your advice. I think I will get the Samsung tablet that I was considering and try this out.
