NFC fails identity card NFC ID on /e/ 3.2

Hi,

I have tried to use my Samsung Galaxy Note S8 phone /w /e/OS 3.2 installed to do an online banking identification account registration procedure. using the phone and my NFC enabled personal identity card.

Steps to reproduce:

PRECONDITION

  • Download and install online banking app for particular bank to perform online ID via identity card NFC functionality.
  • Run app, log into online account (already registered) and perform online ID steps until NFC required (take pictures of identity card, enter PIN of identity card).
  • Have personal identity card available that has NFC enabled for identification procedures.

ACTION

  • Use NFC functionality to complete NFC identification procedure with personal identity card (hold card at rear side of Samsung Galaxy Note S8 phone).

OBSERVED BEHAVIOUR

  • A bleep is heard that something happened, but app reports failure of NFC process with no further details. Possible to start over the whole tedious process again, just not possible to simply repeat NFC step.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR

  • A bleep is heard, NFC procedure successfull to authentificate via NFC procedure. Identification procedure completes OK.

Note: I have had NFC app installed to check any NFC capable type of card held to phone. I have deinstalled it to avoid any overlap of NFC functionality, but did not solve it. The app actually found the id card and displayed some content although it also said it did not know the type of card. So at least I know the whole NFC should actually work.

I have the same issue on Fairphone 3 (bought from Murena store) and the official Slovenian national ID app and card.

Here’s some additional info:

According to the latest version of “AusweisApp” that checks the smartphone NFC reader + ID card held onto it the NFC reader is unable to read “Extended Length”. This is the final and resulting error that leads to the Samsung Galaxy S8 failing to read my online ID via NFC.

The website for the App lists the phone as compatible (SM-G9500, SM-G950F, OS-Version 9).

Just to close the whole loop, this issue is discussed here as well:

But the thread you started seems better suited.

Did you file a bug report already?

The subject, NFC Extended length function, has come up on the forum previously How to fix NFC Extended Length Function issues? - #4 by adaschma.

The associated issue

was only closed through lack of inputs, perhaps because then it was seen as a third party app problem.

A brief online search finds Open eCard: Extended-Length-Problem saying

Unfortunately the currently available NFC-enabled smart phones do not support extended length APDUs and consequently the verification of the card-verifiable certificate and hence the entire authentication protocol fails.

Unresearched but re ausweisapp.bund.de I find a supported devices page
