After upgrading to e/os 4 or shortly thereafter, if I turn on “Hide IP Address”, DNS no longer works. Interestingly enough, when I go into VPN settings, "Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN” are not enabled. It is as if I have no VPN. Tried restarting the phone, no joy. My “Advanced Privacy” version is reading 3.4.1. I’m on a Fariphone 4.
Where are you getting the Advanced Privacy" version information, I can’t find it.

Yes that is the same version I show 3.4.1 so I think it is current. Did you read the warning when you turned that feature on?
While I was in the setting I did change my Automatic DNS to Quad9 maybe that can help?
A new user to the forum has to wait to make new post fro some period (I don’t know the period) it to prevent bots from flooding the forum.
If you want to use VPN do not use Hide i.p. in AP as they conflict.
Leave hide i.p. switched off and let your VPN do the job.
I use Proton VPN with kill switch on, secure core or not and keep hide i.p. in AP settings switched off and all is good

I did try to set my Automatic DNS from auto to Quad9. It then says “Network has no internet access. Private DNS server cannot be accessed”. I’m using the Orbot VPN that came with the phone. It has been fine for my use until now. So, the way to turn on VPN in my phone has always been to hide my IP. That being said, maybe it’s time to go to Proton. I’ve been examining the idea, for a while. grzecel…. Are you using a Fairphone 4, and if not, have you had any issues at all with Proton on e/os?
I read the “Hide IP Address” warning again and it using a TOR so this can be expected, it only used for specific applications. I would do what @grzecel has suggested.
The warnings I get when I turn on “Hide IP Address” is something about my internet speed being reduced and another saying some websites may not work correctly, which is expected if they are blocking relative to geography. I’ve never had a different VPN on my phone other than the Orbot that came with the e/os installed. In this setup, I must hide my IP, which turns on the “Advanced Privacy” and then it says “Real IP Address” is hidden. If I turn that off, it says “Real IP Address” is exposed.
Interestingly enough, I switched the country from which my IP must appear, and it started working again. When I switched it back, it stopped again. I tried yet another country, and it worked. So, this indicates the private DNS may be sourced relative to the country I’m choosing with my VPN.
I’m still not far from getting Proton. So, maybe problems may go away altogether.
