Notes app stuck on account‑selection screen with Murena Workspace

Hello everyone,

I’m having a configuration issue with the Notes app while using my Murena Workspace account. Even though I correctly select the account when opening Notes, the app keeps returning to the startup screen where I have to choose between the Murena account or a local one.

For reference, the Tasks and Contacts apps sync properly. I’m running FP6 on the official /e/OS 3.3.

Steps I’ve already tried:

  • Removing the account

  • Clearing the cache and data

  • Restarting the phone

Thank you for your help.

in Notes itself, or globally in Settings → Accounts? I’d try the latter. Here’s a previous thread on the issue you describe.

Thank you for your response.
The discussion thread didn’t provide a solution and was closed. That’s why I reopened a thread, because the problem is still clearly occurring despite the latest updates. I’ve already tried many things, but none have worked so far.
Adding the account directly via Notes: no success.
I tried using an application password, but it didn’t work.
However, when I connect a different Nextcloud account, synchronization works fine.

I can access my notes from the Nextcloud Notes app on my Fairphone 6 (connected to the Murena.io server), and everything works fine.

Now, when I open the native Notes app, I can view my data by selecting “Use local notes” and then choosing the account icon. However, there are synchronization issues: each time I start the app I have to switch back to the local account and re‑select the Murena account again.

There still appears to be a problem with the Murena apps and two factor authentication (2FA).

Note app V3.7.7-20251119074738 and /e/OS/3.4-a15-20260114569178-official-FP6.

With 2FA enabled, I had the same synchronisation error. Exported my notes. Cleared the app storage and restarted the notes app. It prompts for “CHOOSE ACCOUNT” or “USE LOCAL NOTES”. Choosing the an @murena.io account and OK just returned to the same prompt.

Disabling 2FA enabled being able to select the account and sync all the apps including Notes. Although the documentation refers to using Application passwords, it is not clear.

It unfortunately appears to be much easier to use the Murena apps without enabling 2FA. I look forward to when they can iron out the issues with the apps and make it easier to have 2FA enabled.

I advise to go through the global Android settings account and remove/re-add to get this fixed. That’s the flow murena is testing for. Nextcloud manual token management is imo leaving soon as murena migrates users to SSO

there’s a 2FA issue filed against /e/Notes, but it’s different than the descriptions here Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab - as said, I’d not use the account chooser in-app in Notes but the global account settings for re-setup.

Thanks @tcecyk but the Notes + 2FA problem persists as I described.

Good to hear Murena is working of the flow and it definitely has improved, seems acceptable for the other apps. However, the experience with Notes is not the same.

As @Jamroar I:

I enabled 2FA on the account (via the browser). Added the murena.io account via Settings>Accounts>Murena io. The account and two others (for contacts and webmail) are created. These apps work: Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Tasks but Notes just presents the “CHOOSE ACCOUNT” or “USE LOCAL NOTES”. There is no way to get past that dialogue and even choosing the Murena account after a what appears to be some wait/request/recieve action it returns the the account chooser dialog. It appears Notes does not work with 2FA enabled.
