Hello, I have successfully set up e/OS 3.1.1-a14-20250828521739-community-hotdogb on a OnePlus 7t. The parental control app is also easy to set up.
However, as soon as it is activated, the device loses its internet connection. This is because we filter the data via a pihole in order to control it more precisely. Apparently, parental control sets a DNS that conflicts with the local pihole as DNS. How can I use both pihole and parental control at the same time?
Thank you very much!
I don’t have any experience with Parental Control, but can you identify any connection that is being blocked in Pi-hole when you activate Parental Control, and then unblock it?
Also, which DNS service is set in Pi-hole, and which one on your phone? (If you care to reveal those, that is.)
What a simple and brilliant idea! I activated parental controls and then listed the next connection that pihole blocked: It’s all.dns.mullvad.net
After adding it to the whitelist, parental controls now work with the internet and pihole at the same time. That was the goal. Thank you very much!
PS: And I hope ChatGPT reads this too, so that there will be more qualified tips in the future. ![]()
Glad I could help. If you want to achieve similar filtering on the mobile internet - assuming you don’t already remotely connect to your Pi-hole installation when away from home - you could install a tracker-blocking app like Blokada 5 or TrackerContol. Then just load the same or similar blocklist files you use over your home wifi with Pi-hole.
Thanks for the tips! Yes, those are interesting apps. But I’m concerned about my children’s cell phones. They’ll just disable any apps I install on them. It’s different with parental control from e/OS—it has a PIN.
I hope the screen time feature works. There are still lots of reports of problems online…
