I used to occasionally print from my phone (iphone), usually using the direct connection. I could not connect my phone to my phone either by wifi or direct connection. My phone detected my printer correctly using the wifi direct option in settings but, when I try to connect, my printer says that it has connected but, my phone says that it hasn’t. I don’t really want to install the HP printing app unless this is the only way to make this work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have no idea, but this would be my troubleshooting steps:
- Check if the printing service is working (search in Settings for “printing” or “print”)
- restart the printer, the phone, and the router to clear latent connection problems.
- On printer, try resetting the network settings and reconnecting to Wi-Fi Direct; also, “forget” and rejoin network on the phone
- Use a generic print plugin, if there is something like (have some doubts, since I cannot test) On /e/OS or Lineage OS, go to “Settings > Connected devices > Printing” and enable “Default Print Service” or install a print Service from an open-source store (I saw some on f-droid). Maybe this works without the HP app, even for Wi-Fi Direct connections.
- Try printing from a different app (or from Windows/Mac) to determine if it’s a device or app-level problem.
- Rather unlikely/desperate: Check for firmware updates on both the printer and the phone’s operating system, as this can resolve protocol mismatches. For advanced users: Assign a static IP to the printer (via its control panel) and add it manually as a network printer via IP address on the phone, if that feature is supported.
Good luck.
Hello,
I have Mopria Print and it works immediately with a Brother wifi printer. You can download it from Aurora store.
Set up with Wifi, not direct
Mopria does look like it would do the job but, it does have a couple of Google trackers - Google Sentry Crash Reporting & Google Firebase Analytics. Do you know if our phones will block these? The only apps that I have installed with a tracker have Google Sentry Crash Reporting and that doesn’t report even being blocked (probably because the apps haven’t crashed).
Advanced privacy doesn’t detect any trackers, but i don’t use my printer with my mobile very often, once a week
SOLVED - I have done some more testing. Mopria doesn’t work at all. But, with the built in printing service, and using wifi, I have got the phone printing, as long as I switch off “Hide My IP Address” in Advanced Privacy. I normally leave it on all the time but, now I know! It is now working fine. Thanks for your advice.
