Problem with audio

Hi everyone, I bought a Fairphone 5 and installed /e/OS on it (someone did it for me, I don’t know so much about it myself…). I experience problems with people not hearing me clearly while calling, sometimes even not at all. I don’t always hear the others as well. Is there anyone who knows what might be the problem? Any tips on how to solve this? Thank you!!

Three things I can think of:

  1. If your mobile provider requires or recommends VoLTE (aka 4G Calling), make sure it’s enabled in your network settings. If it doesn’t even appear as an option in your settings, then that could mean that the Fairphone 5 isn’t certified for VoLTE with your present carrier… but not an issue yet if your carrier doesn’t require VoLTE.
  2. I used to have a problem with missing audio during calls on a Sony Xperia phone, even with VoLTE enabled. I happened to switch mobile providers and audio came back with the new SIM card.
  3. It might be that your APN setting didn’t auto-load quite right. Add a brand new APN, enter the exact settings that your carrier recommends for Android, save it, and select it.

Hi Taurus, thank you for your advise! I did enable VoLTE in my network settings. An I already switched providers, but it made no difference…
Could you maybe give me a bit more information about the APN settings? I’m not that technical, so I don’t know what this means or what I should do.

Sure. First, you’ll need to find “Android Settings” or “Android Setup,” etc., somewhere in your carrier’s help/support website. (Here’s an example from a U.S. carrier: https://www.ultramobile.com/setup/android/; your carrier’s instructions will be similar, but different.)

Then, in your phone’s menu, go to:

Settings > Network & Internet > SIM > (your carrier) > Access Point Names > (here, if your provider is listed, tap it; if not, click “+” to add it) > Edit access point > (here, enter - or confirm - all the settings according to your carrier’s support page) > Save > exit > then, make sure it’s selected

The Settings/Network menus may look slightly different in your phone, but they should be similar to above.

Note that the entries in the APN are case-sensitive, and space-sensitive.

I have notice the last few upgrades I have done of eOS the data is always off. I think if you can enable VoLTE then data must be on? I would also recommend turning on WiFi calling for when you on a good WiFi.

To isolate hardware issues (mic/speaker) try a Bluetooth for calls see if it helps.
