Problem with Murena Workspace / automatic upload of files

Hi there!

I have a bit of a problem with Murena Workspace.

When I registered my @murena.io account, it started to upload all my files in my personal folder to the Murena Cloud. Only by deleting the account again this stops.

I have checked all the settings in the Murena Workspace app, but can’t find any option to disable that. I also tried deleting the account and removing all data from the app via app settings and re-register. Same result. Immediately started to upload all files again.

I don’t want all my files to be on the Murena Cloud - as I simply don’t need them there.

How can I stop that upload of files? Or is that not possible?

Thanks
Stefan

Hi @slueoend welcome to the /e/ forum.

Perhaps read this first How does eDrive sync work?.

The workspace app I don’t use, really I prefer to view the account from a PC. I think this way is clearer to see the relationship between your phone and the cloud service which (by default) will backup your phone. Perhaps treat it as a viewer rather than a help to operate the account.

As described in the link there is control of what will sync from Settings > Accounts.

The first item under Accounts for owner is the Murena.io account. (Notice how Workspace is simply a shortcut to this link.)

As a first step you might undo the toggle to sync Pictures and Photos. This actually includes a large proportion of your files while loosely speaking the other sync options set up backup of apps.

Hi @aibd

Many thanks that you have taken time to respond!

I was looking at the link - but unfortunately, I was not able to see these toggles to deactivate under Account Sync described there.

But what that also means: If you register your Murena Account under the Murena Workspace, it will register the Account in the Account Sections and activate eDrive. And that will trigger automatically a sync of practically all your file to the Murena Cloud without explicit consent.

Which is pattern I strongly dislike and I didn’t expect from Murena - to me that is more a Google type of thing. If you can deactivate later (or not), that is a different kettle of fish.

I’m also bit confused what happens if you have multiple devices and use the same account…that will create a bit of a mess as all goes at the same place as far as I can tell…

Just treat it as a comment for others - it’s nothing you can do about :-).

I did also give a try to disable automatic sync. Even with that, the sync was automatically triggered.

So I guess I will have to use a dedicated WebDAV client (and be more careful with Murena products and treat them like Google products) as I want to control which files I upload - and later share with friends & family. For that I don’t want a copy of everything there, just a subpart.

For the backup copy I have my own server running at home…

Best regards & thanks again
Stefan

I just had the same problem. My old phone with e/os didn’t do this, but the new one did. I only found out when I got a message that my storage was full, and found that all my private data was uploaded to the cloud. Astonishingly rotten behavior from a company that claims to have privacy as a primary goal.

The only “workaround” is to remove access to your Murena account from your phone. There are no options to turn it off, and certainly it is not “opt-in” like it darn well should be.

On my phone in Settings > Accounts > My_own_account I see this view:

It includes Remove account … above is the Account sync control.

Within this are 8 toggles. In my view 7 out of 8 items sync. If you turn all these off there is no automatic sync.

However it takes only one button press to manual sync items individually.

However the account is only for those who do wish to keep their phone backed up to Murena’s cloud – not for all, absolutely.

The eDrive link above does say that it is (confusingly perhaps) the Pictures and videos control which will probably back up more than many would want.

Thanks for your post. The first thing I did was to check these things. If I click on “Account sync”, I get a page that only lets me sync items, not change them (I have it from my old phone):

If I tap any of these items, they sync. Long-tap does nothing.

If I click on the “My Account” button, I get to a page that shows my plan, and the “Settings: Additional settings for this account” button takes me to the account manager, and my Murena account settings looks like this:

None of these tabs contains any controls for “Pictures and Video”. I fact, if I search “Video” in settings, I get “Videos” in the Storage manager page, and “Photos and videos” in the Permission manager page, but neither (particularly the latter) does not include anything about accounts.

If only it were this difficult to opt in to the Google-like data slurp…

Here I maybe explained it a little better Disable the cloud or stop the storage full mesages from showing up - #2 by aibd.
