You can let your Murena phone sync to other services than Murena.io, and also select what part to sync where and with what.
I use Syncthing for files between Phone, workstation, laptops. And from workstation to Murena.io, and also from workstation to other cloud.
I have an email provider for my main accouts, it have webmail interface and IMAP support to my workstation, using Thunderbird, stores locally but keeps also on server.
My email at Murena is an alternative. Learned now: I should have used IMAP sync âofflineâ from it too with my workstation, then I could have the old emails during the outage, and i could also have emailed people i guess would want to mail me, to use working address.
I now administer my âownâ Nextcloud server at Hetzner. I find it very good. Hetzner do have backup restore panel users themself can run
Nextcloud is a beastâŠ
Earlier years I have run Owncloud/Nextcloud at home, then at a shared virtual server, then as service from OwnCube (known for bad support, problems⊠- and then they went down - that cloud never got back up⊠but at least they forewarned.) Also tried anothe rin between, but Hetzner hands down feel like much more reliable in both help/support, service interface, and server quality.
As mentioned above by another user, Proton has a set of cloud offerings that are pretty good. Their app called Proton Drive will sync your photos automatically to their cloud, as well as provide cloud file services to various levels, between your devices. Now, they are probably twice the cost monthly, but have a nice bundle of security/privacy related services. I would suggest you look at proton.me to see how it might help you in your quest.
Just an FYI, I bought a Fairphone 4 (being in the US) from Murena for the de-googled aspects. I use NO Murena services. I self-host some things, use Proton for some things, and some other services for some things. The trick here, which many folks seem to overlook is that any online or self-hosted service can potentially fail. Most of TOUs that the vendors require to use there services specifically put the responsibility back onto the customer much of the time anyway. So itâs best to spread your stuff out, so that if one goes down, youâre not 100% down.
I also have an account in Proton, but even if I use ProtonMail, I need a light Contact application on my Murena. The Contacts frame of Proton Mail is not very convenient for using on a phone
Synch with a cloud is a good way to have more security in case of loss or crash of the telephone. Fortunately I exported my contacts a few weeks ago because my Murena is not in very good condition at the moment.
I have a hosting provider that can also do that (with plenty of space and bandwith on my domains), so I can run nextcloud there.
But that is for synching files and stuff. I thought the Murena solution, integrated into the /e/OS, also offered something that was more like a full backup (including app data, settings, etcâŠ)
Dear Murena team, I just read your mail and I wanted to thank the team for the last two weeks. Iâm sure It was very difficult. Privacy is very important for me and I hope you will come out stronger from this. If the stability improves I will invest in a Fairphone and murena pro account to support you. Much love to everyone.
You can self-host or now there is a couple of sites that will run the containers for you. Itâs heavily developed at the moment, but it might be an alternative for you. I use that for my photos and videos. Works well on all platforms too.
The two things I think Proton does well is mail and the Proton Pass authentication app.
I would like to thank the team and @GaelDuval for the technical details that have just been provided. Personally, I was hoping for this transparent communication that would strengthen user confidence.
Good luck with the long work that remains to be done to get Murena fully restored.
As I said before, I am not looking for compensation or anything. I am willing to pay the right price so that the services provided by Murena are reliable and resilient.
I totally agree. It was horribly long but now all is working again. It was a reminder that no system is 100% sure. We must keep private backup, share more than one agenda and let now our contacts a secondary addressâŠ
Good luck /e/OS

The error message seems to be getting prettier though. Fingers crossed!
(Now itâs showing the âSomethingâs broken; weâre on it!â page again)
[EDIT 2024-10-26T16:10+00:00 UTC] back again. That was a bit alarming.
I am still getting âError 502â or âInternal Server Errorâ right now (reloaded without cache).
EDIT: it loaded right now, maybe itâs not accepting all incoming requests.
As per Gaels post, it was the worst case, as there was no strategy and no in house experts.
Iâm sure the words âyour dataâ in the /e slogan, led a great deal of user to think you know what youâre doing.
Having out side experts just for disaster recovery and then returning to how things where done before⊠???
Hope â and yes, hope is all I can express at this stage â /e will learn from all this in many ways.
And noone seems to have any idea about eta. Yes, itâs far beyond anything acceptable.
When this situation persists there is a growing concern about the sustainability of it all. This is really bad!
We already know data recovery will take lot of time, alternatively they will restore a cold backup which I think mean a snapshot of data taken from a point in time earlier then when it went offline.
No more complaint on that will help.
Now, I got to think of how Nextcloud sync client operate at server restoreâŠ
-It removed local files that do not exist on server /!\
I did a test last week on my hired instance StorageShare at Hetzner:
I created new files both locally and from within my Nextcloud web login, in a folder that Nextcloud client syncs with my computer.
Then I restored a backup (using Hetzner konsoleH interface) from a time before I created the files.
Of course the files on the server âvanishedâ. Problem: The sync client deleted the files on my computer too - without asking. (both the files created locally, and them created on server)
The best workaround I can think of so far, is to in the sync client settings check the box that tells it to move removed files to trashcan. And then we must watch what happens and catch them. Another problem is that this setting affect all servers configured.
(the sync client really suck in many waysâŠ)
So first step for now is to set pause on any file syncing to Murena.io.
Edit, adding: I plan to try an alternative way on my computer: remove the current sync to Murena, and create a new one to a new local folder. After Murena wakes up and client sync, I can compare the folder trees using a suitable tool.
This is nextcloud-client 3.13.4, on Mageia Linux, Plasma.
How other sync clients (i.e. to phone) handle local files that are not on server after server restore, I have not tried.
This really need to be tested and reported by Murena.
