Sorry for the offtop, conversations.im (https://github.com/siacs/Conversations) is private messenger that doesn’t need phone number and is encrypted using omemo (https://conversations.im/omemo/).

Just go to the securechatguide website and it says there that Kontalk has two Google trackers.
Google play version im assuming as I just tested the F-droid version and has no trackers.
Google Play Store sucks.
Kontalk is XMPP based with OpenPGP used for encryption.
I would recommend, a using a good XMPP service only with OMEMO support.
There are beautiful clients like https://dino.im and https://conversations.im/omemo/ for smartphones.
You can even host a XMPP server yourself.
