Set up and troubleshoot a mobile data connection (3G/4G)

I use this link as it is in English https://www.apn.how/pt/vodafone. There is also the proper page https://www.vodafone.pt/.

As you specifically ask about 5G, is your actual plan mentioned in the English page? is it a fairly new plan? Are you able to choose your actual plan on the APN page [*1]? Are the “presets” on the APN page all written exactly correct? Is IMS Registration complete? The INFO test is linked at the bottom of this post.

APN Setting and Troubleshooting 2026

What’s changed

Since ~early 2026 users are no longer required to enter values for MCC and MNC as part of APN settings. APN settings will be published by your carrier; be sure to get up to date data.

One would hope that the APN data will match

  • on your SIM card,
  • provided on /e/OS install and
  • your carrier’s latest APN.

APN will likely fail if the SIM card data cannot be updated to exact current values.

Before anything further please turn off all Advanced Privacy and check that the Location service works correctly in one or two apps.

Easiest

In case of difficulties one can ask the carrier to do an APN reset OTA (Over The Air) … alternatively

Manual APN Configuration

Ensure you have a good Wi-Fi connection.

Open Settings :mag: Search APN … or

Navigate to Mobile Networks:

Tap on Wireless & networks or Conections.

Select Mobile networks or Mobile data.

Access APN Settings:

Tap on Access Point Names or APN.

Add New APN:

Tap on the ‘+’ icon or Add button to create a new APN.

Enter APN Details:

Fill in the required fields based on your carrier’s specifications. [1]

Save APN Settings:

Tap on Save to save the new APN.

It is OK if Save takes a while complete … implies the the settings have been checked valid by the carrier.

Return to Settings > APN

Ensure the New setting is active with :radio_button:

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues while setting APN, consider the following steps:

Reset to Default: Navigate to APN settings, tap on top right 3 dot menu, and select Reset to default.

Activate Airplane Mode: Enable Airplane mode, wait for a few seconds, and then disable it to refresh the network settings.

Or Reset to default then Restart your phone while connected to Wi-Fi to refresh the network settings.

Hello AIBD, this is excellent information thank you. The company is actually Amigo (a sub-brand of Vodafone but of course uses the Vodafone network. I was a little overwhelmed by the information, but tapped away and hoped for the best. It appears the default APN settings didn’t all match the settings on the APN how link you sent. So I set up a new profile with those settings listed, and ping – 5G mobile data! Strange the phone or operating system (or whatever it is) doesn’t have correct default settings. Anyway, thank you so much for this fix, beer’s on me tonight.

Maybe this is something to do with the relationship betwwen Amigo and Vodafone, idk. Carriers have to keep the public list updated while they (may) make minor changes as technology evolves … and / or there may be a lag in Google handing over changes to the public list to AOSP.

If you think it would be useful to others you could go further and notify devs of the changes which are required. Maybe this thread informs some of the steps Wrong APN settings Telia Norway.

In case you wanted to pursue this,

Too much detail

I believe the following would be the basis for the /e/OS “presets” for Vodafone in Portugal.

Thank you, yes I will be taking it further to improve things for others. Before I asked for advice here, I sent a request for support from Fairphone. They have now responded, and will be forwarding to Murena to investigate. So although the case seems resolved, hopefully some defaults could be fixed. Also I have sent a request to Amigo to provide official APN settings not just for Murena, but so I can be sure what I have done is completely correct.

For further information if useful to anyone, the v4.1.1 update didn’t resolve this particular issue after trying Reset to defaults. I reinstated the profile from the APNhow website and all functioning well again. This is for Vodafone Portugal sub-brand Amigo (screenshot attached).

This might be a long shot but here goes nothing: yesterday I was “troubleshooting” my work-provided 5G sim card for my laptop as it didn’t have signal, and plugged it in to my Pixel 8 running the official /e/os v. 4.1.1 (turns out that work-issued dataplan was cancelled which is why it didn’t connect but that’s another story).

Afterwards I reconnected my personal SIM card with an LTE plan to my phone, and my mobile data has been gone ever since. No LTE data, no calls except 2G which somehow does work and allows me to make calls and SMS messages. I have a spare phone running LineageOS and my personal SIM connects to LTE data without any issues on that device.

On my primary phone (Pixel) nothing has solved this so far: airplane mode, resetting APN settings, resetting mobile data settings, reboots etc. I even copied over the APN settings from the LOS phone to the Pixel, but nothing seems to work. My carrier’s customer service opens Monday morning unless I visit one of their shops, but I think the only thing I haven’t tried yet is factory reset for my phone.

Anyone ever experienced something alike?

The Troubleshooting section in Post#21 introduces

Restore default, which hopefully you tried already.

Looks like you need the more heavy duty

Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings.

Tried that already, unfortunately no dice.

Just a possible off field idea. As you set up something of a comparison between LineageOS and /e/OS … I speculated here SMS sending broken after eOS 4.0 update (SMSC field won't save) - Galaxy S9+ - #38 by aibd
that perhaps exists some “over simplification” of Preferred network type which might affect some carrier situations more than others (??)

Thanks for the input, it’s possible there are some APN stuff we’re not seeing. However, my data, calls and SMS worked just fine with 4.1.1 for quite a while and the only notable thing before they stopped working, was me putting my work sim into the phone. Ofc, there’s a chance that some modem or other HW component has failed but the timing would be extraordinary…

So not APN but Preferred network type, in that link I show comparative (/e/OS / LineageOS) images. Do you observe this difference with your two devices?

Nope, they’re the same across both devices: 3G, LTE and 5G. LineageOS 23.2 and /e/os 4.1.1.

Talked with my ISP’s support and they didn’t have any tricks up their sleeve. I ended up switching to an eSIM from the physical card I have since I figured I’ve got nothing to lose and I could do it by myself, but after setting it up on the Pixel it’s still as mute as a fish. No LTE, just 2G and “connection lost” status in the SIM settings.

Next up I’ll probably need to walk down to their store to hear the obligatory “what’s this OS you’ve installed?”

No changes related to your issue were made in /e/OS.

Just for clarification on the APN changes you found necessary.

Did you make any more change than

type="default,mms"

to

type="default,suple,mms,xcap"

or were there more?

Changes in /e/OS would require Report an issue

If you make a report please can you try to find the documentation to support the relationship described as

You can see how another set of Vodafone changes were handled in this issue

I originally reported this to Fairphone and they assured me they would pass on to Murena. If you think it’s better for me to also report to Murena using the link provided, I can do that. Yes, there were more changes. Attached are two separate screen shots of the original settings “Default APN”; the other two “New APN” are the settings I made (with the Name: My APN). We did the same for my girlfriend’s Fairphone 6 eOS also on the Vodafone/Amigo network and both function now.

As none of the methods I tried to restore the LTE connectivity on my device worked, I went with the nuclear option and reflashed the stock Google ROM (tested that LTE was working) and then back to /e/OS. The connection works again with my eSIM but boy was it a pig of a job.

If I wouldn’t have had the bootloader locker, I could’ve tried erasing the modemst1 and modemst2 partitions via fastboot, but such is life. Maybe one lesson learned from this ordeal is not to try out any other SIMs if the current one is working.

the xcap/supl apn types for net2.vodafone.pt aren’t yet added / modified into the two first entries of PT.xml · 960dc98a9528abf56b9a320dd5f22d071f3ea1dc · e / os / android_vendor_apn · GitLab .. should go to the gitlab issues where it’s noticed by /e/OS devs. You can use a murena.io account to file it.

Hello aibd, I posted the new and successful APN settings on the Github website as you suggested. Once I set up the account, I couldn’t see how to report an issue, so I used your link. Anyway I hope that worked.

linked this here - would be good to have at least 1 confirmation of another vodafone PT user

I’m the girlfriend that DavidA refers too. My newly purchased phone doesn’t connect with the default vodafone PT APN settings (just retested and confirmed), but works fine with the settings he shared above.
