I have recently acquired a Fairphone 6 with /e/OS (bought from Murena). I have spent several hours trying to use the work profile with Shelter but I am unable to share files/photos from the personal to the work profile and vice versa.
The posts on the subject in this forum do not solve my problem. Here’s what I have done :
installed Shelter via the App Lounge
configured it and activated the File Shuttle feature including keeping app on top (several clicks required to do this)
cloned the Gallery since I wanted to try and share a photo
set permissions for photos and videos in the personal and work profile versions of the Gallery
I took a photo with the camera in the personal profile. It appears in the personal profile version of the Gallery but not the work profile version. Which is what I want !
To share the photo, I opened it (in the personal profile) and then clicked on the share icon. Then I chose “Work” BUT the Gallery app does not appear (although I have cloned it). So I can’t go any further.
I even did a factory reset to start from scratch. Still didn’t work.
I noticed that there are no connected apps listed under “Connected work and personal apps” under Security and Privacy settings. Is this normal ?
Thats totally what intended. The apps installed in shelter should not access your private data. If you are using the ecloud you could also install nextcloud in your work space/shelter and upload it there than you can access it in both profiles.
Thanks for your answer. Maybe my question was not clear.
I understand that the 2 profiles are isolated/insulated from each other. This is indeed the purpose of Shelter.
However I was under the impression (from numerous posts on the web) that there is the possibility for the user (not apps) to selectively share files between the two profiles.
And that this feature is provided for via the File Shuttle option. In the Shelter settings it states “File Shuttle : when enabled you’ll be able to browse/view/pick/copy files in Shelter from main profile and vice versa, ONLY through Documents UI (named FIles or Documents on your launcher) …”
I have tried with the Gallery app and the Files app. It doesn’t work as described (via share).
Thanks for the Reddit link. I had seen it but was hoping that there was a solution in Shelter.
However it looks like there isn’t one. The Reddit post solutions rely on Mixplorer which must be installed in the personal and work profiles. The question then is : is Mixplorer safe ? If not it defeats the whole purpose of using Shelter.
Although this topic is no longer directly related to /e/OS I think it is important for /e/OS because a working sandbox solution is essential. Are there alternatives to Shelter that one can use on /e/OS ? Does anybody know ?

The Gallery app cannot receive a share (doesn’t have the necessary intents in its manifest). Any Messenger/Mail (or the Print function) in the Work Profile though is able to receive a share from the Main Profile.
this is hard to unpack. Imo the function is there, but your expectation is to permanently share files / photos visible through Gallery. The File-Shuttle feature description in the settings advertises this. I’m unsure if Gallery can be made to accommondate this.
You did notice the Shelter shortcut in the left sidebar in documentsui file browser? what you can do is selecting and DCIM/ images and copy them over into Shelters DCIM/ via that sidebar shortcut.
