Speculative the eSIM may rely on Google helpers not available to AOSP. Maybe the eSIM encounters “security issues” … therefore perhaps related

The most important bit is to have the phone online with a good Wi-Fi connection to help avoid this error

Edit from your link and you need to reboot the phone, while connected to the WiFi Network.

I will follow up when I read the article more fully. APN changes for 2026 probably force more emphasis on IMS registration. [1]
