Smartphone Contacts not usable in Murena-Workspace

Hi,

I have a problem using my smartphone contacts in the Contacts app in murena-workspace.

Using the Contacts app in a browser, I always got a notice, that there is no addressbook configured, even though contact sync is activated on my smartphone.

I use /e/os v3.0.4 on a Pixel 8, the contacts app that is provided by /e/os has the version 1.7.34.

I tried different approaches to see the contacts in both the smartphone and the workspace app:
I deleted all addressbooks on both phone and server and added a new one, that I populated from a fresh vcf-Backup.
Configuring the addressbook on the phone did not result in it showing up in murena-workspace.
Creating a new addressbook in murena-workspace did result in it showing up on the phone. Adding a contact in murena-workspace did result in the contact beeing synchronized to the phone. BUT… As soon as the contacts were imported on the phone, the contacts in workspace disappear and the message “no addressbook configured” is displayed.
Importing contacts in workspace results in an unruly amount of import errors (roughly 1/4 is not imported), the imported contacts are displayed on the phone though.
I tried another approach and exported the contacts using vcf-v3. Now the import in workspace results in only 1 error and the contacts are synchronized with the smartphone.

BUT there is a HUGE catch! As soon as a new contact is added on the phone, workspace “looses” the addressbook again. Is it possible, that the fact that murena uses an outdated nextcloud version leads to problems in communication between phone and workspace?

This definitely needs a fix IMHO.

Best regards

Bernhard

if you’re setting up new addressbooks remote side, there’s no auto-discovery device side, you’ll need to press a button (same as with calendars btw) and then another sync button afterwards. Same applies into the other direction.

See “Known Limitations or Bugs” at [HOWTO] Use the Contacts App

When I make sure that screen is up to date, I don’t see contacts falling through the cracks.

As for vcf v3 import through Nexcloud, there can be bugs: New phone: contacts synchronized but no phone numbers - #19 by Offebecher

I did exactly that. Multiple times.
I set up an address book in murena workspace, went to synchronization options on the phone and klicked address book discovery.
The address book loads on the phone and I can see all contacts.
As soon as I add a contact on the phone, the address book in murena workspace disappears (aka can not be used via browser app and the no address book message is displayed).
It isn’t deleted, it just cannot be used.
I use only onboard sync tools on the phone for calender and address book, no davx5

could you make a demo video? I can’t replicate a murena.io “no addressbook configured” error message after creating new contacts in a new addressbook from “both sides”

I’ll see if i can do that tonight or tomorrow.
To be more specific about the version used on the phone (if relevant) /e/os 3.0.4 community edition.

No need, found the error. I was working on my business laptop and the browser we have to use at work seems to have massive compatibility issues.
As I work in a secure environment, the browser is sanboxed and probably not the latest chrome engine.
On a current Firefox or Chrome on my Linux Laptop at home, I have no issues.

Sorry for wasting your (and my) time :upside_down_face: and thank you for trying to help.

no worries, it improved the contacts-app HOWTO forum entry with that known-issues section

I could still provide video of the browser problem, if you’re interested
