Some of my apps do not appear to have notifications enabled, even though they are in the settings

Hi!

I recently installed e/os, and so far so good! The only issie I might have so far, is that some apps will never appear in my notifications, even though all notifications permissions are given in the settings of the app. For exemple, I have a messaging app, Treebal, where I have to manually check in frequently to see if I have new messages or not: they will not appear in the notification “bar” (how do you call it?) Same for notifications for Reddit as well. I thought it was a permission issue, but all seems normal in the app settings (“All Treebal/Reddit notifications” is toggled on). Is there a fix to this that I somehow missed?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Loriane welcome to the /e/ users forum.

Maybe these apps need you to enable

Settings > App compatibility > Cloud messaging

and maybe (from the same view) Google device registration.

Hi, thank you for your answer and support!

I went into Cloud messaging, and the apps do not appear there (I actually have only 3 apps registered there), but I don’t seem to be able to add them myself?

And I don’t know so much about google device registration, I’m very green when it comes to everything IT, but I went to e/os to degoogle my device, wouldn’t it be counterproductive to register it again?

Oh, and if it changes anything, I do use Lawnchair instead of the official launcher.

App compatibility is a part of microG which itself is a very big part of /e/'s method to maintain a distance from Google.

You have 3 apps using Cloud messaging. This would not be your doing … you must have had Cloud messaging enabled already and those 3 apps took it. OK.

I guess you found Google device registration off?

Tbh I don’t know quite how google dependent these two apps are.

Let’s look on Plexus https://plexus.techlore.tech/.

treebal gets Gold on microG. No result plain degoogled.

reddit slightly more mixed results.

I very much doubt Lawnchair could be involved with the Notification issue.

Google dependent apps will likely benefit from Google device registration on. While avoiding Google dependent apps I guess means finding an alternative.

Edit.

Try turm Google device registration ON with all running apps closed. If practical uninstall and reinstall one of the problem apps. Test if it can receive Notifications. Once tested turn OFF Google device registration and see if notifications continue (due to the app having got the registration).
