Am I missing something or is the navigation functionnality in the Maps app only a demo? Didn’t seem to work when I used it on the road a few days ago.
My guess would be that you need to download a map of your area.
There is an icon 
at the foot of the main navigation screen. Note you can also choose in Map Settings > General > Map Storage where the map will be stored, internal or external storage.

Indeed, that was it. I don’t find it very user-friendly. At least we should be told to download a map before starting an itinerary. Thanks aibd
