Dear users
I hope to be at the right place here.
I have a hunting dog, and to locate the dog I am using the Tractive App. There, OBE can choose between the standard map, satellite and OpenStreetMap OSM. I always used OSM because of its accuracy.
I have a new Fairfone 5 with e/os. Of course, I installed also the tractive App. Today, I wanted to locate my dog. But the OSM is not available. Whenever I choose OSM the standard map kept ob remaining. It took me double time to find my dog because the standard map isn’t accurate at all.
How can I manage to get the OSM option again?
I already did uninstall the tractive app, and I installed it again from the Aurora store, but this did not bring back the OSM option.
I am a newbie and I don’t understand complicated technical explanations. I am grateful for any help, especially with simple explanations.
I can explain why this fails under the hood (Maps API / microg / maplibre things), but the gist is there is atm no resolution to enable the map tiling that you knew from the Tractive in-App OSM option.
What you can do is login to the web version at https://my.tractive.com/ where the OSM tiles will load. You can install / pin any website to the homescreen via the browser options.
great! I spared this at first, but to keep track of the underlying issue myself
here's the technical explanation, basically 'unimplemented Method: addTileOverlay'
microG uses maplibre-gl as surrogate for when Android Apps on /e/OS use Google Maps API functions. Maplibre-gl does indeed use OSM under the hood to generate the map tiles even for the base view (that you deem worse), BUT it tries to mimic the color map style scheme of Google and could opt out of either rendering some elements (foodpaths?) or hasn’t implemented the necessary api methods.
As to that OSM map layer Tractive offers to the very right in the UI: it doesn’t load at all because microG doesn’t implement the method to load a tile overlay, the debug points to this: D GmsMap : unimplemented Method: addTileOverlay
I am trying it right now. In the web version, I have OSM, but instead, my own position isn’t available any more…
Do I have to sell my fairfone? The functionality of tractive is very important to me!!!
“fake geolocation” switch button on/off is in the launcher widget is to the left from home screen. Is it off?
The browser asking you to access geolocation is a precondition. The myosmatic/create-map and mytraction both prompt for location share in Mobile Firefox, not sure what is wrong.
in this intro video at the 1min mark the Advanced Privacy widget shown, then slightly scrolled down there’s 3 switches for it (will look a bit different 1 year later) and I wonder what they’re set to for you
as to that myosmatic test if the browser can use geolocation, I’ve found it will not ask automatically, but there’s a button in the map areas upper left to explicitly ask for it - the blue pin icon.
But this icon isn’t visible in the tractive web app.
I use plenty of navigation apps, and all of them show my position. Except tractive… Nor in the app nor n the web version.
Sorry, you must think me to be stupid, an I start to think the same.
Do I have to make this test too? But this means downloading another app?!
it’s just a method to establish browser geoloc to work. No download, just a website visit. Then you have confirmation.
Takes a few dozen seconds.
If you want then you can contact tractive and have something to show to understand why their website (as App alternative) isn’t asking for your geoloc or where in the interface the option is found
Aha, this is just a website? I didn’t realize that. Thank you for your patience, I truly appreciate!
When clicking your test link and taping on the blue pin, I can see my position.
So, why the hell this is not the case when using tractive?!
