Transferring data from a Samsung to a Fairphone 6

Hello,

I’m trying to transfer my call history and text messages from my Samsung Galaxy to my new Fairphone 6, which comes with /e/OS pre-installed.

When I start up the FP6, I don’t see step 4 prompting me to connect a cable to copy apps and data, as shown in the help section at Passer à Fairphone, rien de plus simple ! .

How do I do this with this FP6 /e/OS?

Thank you for your help

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online services

Task 4: Back up your SMS/MMS and call logs

It is not possible to save SMS/MMS, neither call logs, with integrated default apps. That’s why we advise users to use SMS Backup and Restore:

  1. Open Apps
  2. Search and install SMS Backup & Restore
  3. Open the app, and create a backup
  4. Copy the backup files (calls-[date].xml and sms-[date].xml) on your computer

Task 4: Restore your SMS/MMS and call logs

We advise to use SMS Backup & Restore:

  1. Copy the backup files (calls-[date].xml and sms-[date].xml) from your computer on the Fairphone 3
  2. Open Apps
  3. Search and install SMS Backup & Restore
  4. Open the app
  5. Tap Restore on homepage, and follow the process

Thanks piero, but I wanted to avoid using Google. And the Google migration to Murena just about contacts, photos and the calendar, isn’t?
It doesn’t work to transfer my text messages, call history and apps.

Hello

Maybe if you install the Samsung SmartSwitch app (from Apploung or aurora store), it can help you do the migration of messages, etc… Then you can delete the app.

I’m not sur if it will work on /e/ since the message app is different, etc… but you can try.

Otherwise you might need to install Quik SMS (from F-droid) on the old phone, make a backup file (in settinngs menu), transfer it to the new phone and restore from file (/e/OS sms app is a fork of Quik SMS)

And no idea for the call history if SmartSwitch doesn’t do the trick. Maybe you will find a dedicated app for back-up/restore the call history that can you do the transfer and then delete it.

Hello AurelienS,
Samsung SmartSwitch isn’t working; the process stops as soon as I plug in the cable. Nothing happens.
Google has backed up everything (SMS and MMS messages, call history, apps), but when I sync with my FP6, nothing appears.

Google says to go to Settings on the new device > tap Back up or copy data, then Copy data. But it is for a Pixel phone. And I can’t find that in the FP6 under /e/os/.

Just follow the instructions given by piero in the first answer.
There is no other solutions today.

GabrielT, have you got it or not? I don’t want to transfer my contacts (I’ve already done that with Murena) or photos (on the SD card).

Ok Piero’s solution does it for sms and call.

But I want to transfer also apps from a Google One backup. But Google One doesn’t work on the FP6 running /e/os/. It says “Unable to load”.

so do you want to use google or not ?

It’s no big surprise that google apps don’t work on a de-googled OS, which has MicroG as a replacement for google play services.

You will probably need to transfer apps and their settings manually.

By the way, switching to /e/ can be an opportunity to get rid of some of the most invasive apps, and replace them by open source ones.

Yes, I use SMS Backup & Restore and reinstall all my app.

Thanks

  • Install SMS Import / Export for F-Droid on your Samsung
  • Export your call logs and messages, to files that can be transferred to the new phone (e.g. of an SD card, or by copying to / from a connected computer)
  • Install SMS Import / Export for F-Droid on your Fairphone
  • Import the call logs and messages from the transferred files

The app will also import / export contacts and blocked numbers
