Trouble adding outlook acount to the Mail app on /e/OS fairphone 6

Hi!
I just got the /e/OS on fairphone 6 and I’m trying to add my outlook mail to the Mail app. When I type in the address it says “Configuration not found” and when I try to configure manually it says “Checking incoming server settings failed! Network error” I followed the instructions from here POP, IMAP, and SMTP settings for Outlook.com - Microsoft Support

It seems to be some issue specifically with the outlook account because when I try to add my proton mail account it says “configuration found”, I didn’t go forward with that set up though as I want that account in its separate app.

I’ve read that there’s been problems with outlook in the past. But I don’t know what the status is now.

can confirm that there’s a bug. One can set the Oauth2 method manually though and I got to the browser based token flow - but it eventually errors after the redirect back from msft.

You’ll need to just use Microsofts Outlook app until resolution.

Outlook email addresses in Mail used to work since version /e/OS v2.7 via Oauth2 - I remember fixes for it.

There’s also

  • a related bug on “Configuration not found” that adds to the confusion
  • with k9mail / thunderbird itself I run into “User is authenticated but not connected”, but that is up to ipv6 (funnily, embarassingly), so if you can disable that or are on a ipv4-only network while setting it up, it should work

Thanks for the info. I got the Thunderbird mail app instead. Do you know if the calendar app works, in regards to adding Outlook acount? It doesn’t seem so to me but I couldn’t find a tutorial on how to do it. There are some different options of what type of calendar to add.

for just reading you could get by with just a webical subscription - but if you want to write to the calendar you need the Outlook app anyway, see these 2 threads:

Why do I need specifically to use the outlook app? If the default calendar app doesn’t work I don’t see why I can use some other app instead.

I would say that it is because you want to interact with a certain proprietary system.

Added to which, this is just opinion, Microsoft is struggling and not yet always winning to fix demands by other authorities.

If my understanding is correct, not only Microsoft emails use their proprietary protocol Exchange but business emails often have additional limitations on connection means for safety reasons.

For example many companies might forbid email server access from any other app than outlook because outlook safety is more controlled, and in addition some companies might even force the use of Microsoft Intune, with an optional device registration as well.

As tcecyk said, Exchange protocol implementation is tricky is often fails on third-apps.

My outlook account is a private one, not a work e-mail provided from a company. Since it worked fine to add on Thunderbird I don’t see why there would be any problems to add the calendar to some calendar app. The calendar app I’ve used on my previous phone had some changes made that I didn’t like so I want to find some alternative.

Sorry, but you got an answer in Post #4 but then you seemed to ask a WHY question.

Do we understand that you want more alternative Calendar ideas? … and wanting “editable”?

Post 4 says only outlook app works to edit outlook calendar. I disagree. I looked at some different options and decided to try Bluemail. I was able to add my outlook account and to edit the outlook calendar from the app.

ok, good recommendation (bluemail). When I check on users issues they’re often outside my own experience with software alternatives.

just for clarity, I didn’t criticize a protocol - previous issues were how the token collected by the brower login was transported Android internally to k9mail. I guess this breakage is similar. The Oauth2 flow is to spec (but only available on ipv4). Unsure for how much longer outlook will offer imap though.

The k9mail fork of /e/OS should 1. autodetect outlook settings (bug) and 2. for as long as msft doesn’t do ipv6 force the ipv4 addresses (more of a feature and avoid user confusion)

The default email client on e os is a little bit tricky, depending on whether you’ve locked down your browser or not…I experienced problems getting OAuth to work with until I reset my browser to its defaults and tried again (I had locked down a lot of browser settings). This could be one reason. The other reason it won’t work is because the default options in the dialog boxes are the wrong ports, no server name, and wrong auth type, so nothing works without tweaking each option. Please try this:

I followed these steps:

Type in your hotmail/outlook address and hit next.

Server is outlook.office365.com.

Security is SSL/TLS.

Port is 993.

Authentication is OAuth 2.0.

Username is your email address, then hit next.

You will then see a page with a big blue “SIGN IN” button, tap that and it opens a browser window.

You will then see a Microsoft login page “Verify your email”, underneath this is “Use your password”, tap that.

Now enter your password and tap Next.

It may prompt for “Setting up your passkey…”, tap Next.

It will check incoming server settings now, and should show you the tiny green tick for incoming settings, and it should say incoming settings are valid.

It will then prompt for outgoing server settings:

Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Security: StartTLS

Port: 587

Authentication: OAuth 2.0.

Username: Your email address.

Tap Next and it should then say that outgoing settings are valid with the tiny green tick.

That should be all set up now.

Please let me know if this works. I have taken screenshots so can post them if anyone is keen.
