Two users (personal and professional) on /e/OS and Murena

Hello everyone,

I use a Fairphone 4 with /e/OS, 1 sim card, and a Murena.io account (mail, contact, files, calendar etc.).

I want to separate my professional and personal life. I’ll give you the ideal I’d like to achieve:

  • the personal (existing) account and the professional account (not existing) should each have a separate murena.io e-mail address, a separate calendar, a separate cloud, possibly separate contacts etc.
  • in each application (calendar, cloud etc.) I need to be able to switch quickly from one account to the other (I use K9-Mail so for mail I don’t think there’s any problem)
  • the professional account should be upgradable to a paid version
  • if possible, I’d like to be able to switch the professional account on and off on my cell phone, either manually or automatically.

I think a new murena.io account, set up as a new account on my mobile, would do the trick. Do you agree?

If yes:
I’ve tried going to Settings, Accounts, Add Account, Murena.io, and it says straight away “You can only set up one ecloud account on your device”.
Is this due to the outage being repaired at the moment? Or should I proceed differently?

If not:
What solution do you recommend? I’ve read several posts about Shelter but it seems to me to be rather recommended for containing GAFAM applications.

Thanks in advance,
Ciok

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online servicesphone

I think I’ll use the multiple user function (Settings > System > Multiple users), which is specific to the phone if I’ve understood correctly. I think that for each user, you can associate a different murena account (I haven’t tested this yet, as it’s impossible to create a new murena account at the moment with the outage).
The advantage is that the two profiles (pro and personal) are well separated. The disadvantage, I imagine, is that I won’t be able to switch from one profile to the other directly in each native /e/OS app (file, calendar etc.), I’ll have to completely change profile each time.

I am still interested in your opinion.

Ciok

Hi Ciok,

Probably you could add second Murena account if you use Shelter (or add a second user via Settings:System:Multiple Users), but I doubt you’ll get notifications until you switch?

So maybe you need a second NextCloud/similar provider. (Pretty sure I read the older /e/ email address format goes to the Murena system).

To be able to turn it ~off, maybe install a second app suite that doesn’t start on boot? Not sure about dis/enabling running in background…

With apologies someone more experienced is yet to post, and Best Wishes

I’d say:

  • The easiest solution is the usage of multiple users. Downside in my opinion: you cannot receive private calls when you activated the work-profile.
  • Shelter seems to be much more flexible, it can be used to contin GAFAM but as well creating a 2nd account. It i easy to use and little risk to blow up your system. It simply created a parallel profile next to the main one of your phone. Just give it a try and share your experience
Downside: a.f.a.ik. you cannot turn-off one of the profiles.
Apart from Shelter there are Insular and Island as well.

2 more thoughts:

  • if you do not manage to get the 2nd Murena account in shelter running you could try to use for the 2nd account simply Nextcloud for contacts and calendar. There are service providers offering Managed Nextclouds (one with free subscriptions is for instance the Swiss Create a new woelkli Cloud Storage account or this one Consumer subscriptions, flexible & shareable | The Good Cloud from the Netherlands).
  • Just as a solution for contacts and phone, I’d like to share a thought with you. For some time in the past I has a business number with Sipgate. They have an app with a virtual phone number (no eSIM), they provide you with a phone number and you can do incoming and outgoing phone calls whereever you have an internet connection. No SIM slot in the phone is used for that. Their service is called Satellite https://www.satellite.me/ and works pretty well. As far as I know, you need to be based in Germany and they only distribute German phone numbers. But I am sure there are similar services around.

So, from my side no straight-forward solutions, just some ideas
