I have seen some closed topics with similar issues but mine is different: when I try to add a photo from Gallery, the latter don’t even open…
Tried to empty cache of both apps.

i confirm I cannot even get to that point.
A description then, if the Contacts app has not asked Gallery to open.
You might start from what does happen from
Contacts app > Edit contact > is the camera icon seen?
Is the opportunity to take photo available?
Is it a “lack of contrast” type problem like Contact Photo edits: SAVE button invisible in bright system theme (#8876) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab?
Alternatively, from the title, are you describing that the contact + existing image is behaving Read only.

once, after few attempts, a message appeared saying that Gallery app closes systematically. But all the other attempts, just nothing happens. It means Contacts tries to open Gallery but the latter crashes even before opening. No problem with the camera, in case I wanted to take a picture and assign it to a contact. And it’s not the contrast issue because the Gallery app doesn’t open.
Have you tested from “Create new” contact?
“No permissions denied” for both Contacts and Gallery?
Hmmm, so you do see this choice correctly displayed?
In several tests, I find a significant delay between
“Choose photo” and
“Complete action using Gallery”
This would imply that Gallery cannot start to open till after “Complete action using Gallery”.
In my case 3 gallery type apps are installed.

sorry I saw only this question in an email so replied only to this one by email. it doesn’t work either by creating a new contact.

yes i see the choice correctly. i just tested again waiting a while after clicking on ”choose photo” and the error message appeared

In gallery app I decided to Clear storage. This will not delete any of my images but will undo my settings and permissions.

To fix I was able to save an image for a contact using Fossify Gallery from App Lounge. At install time I allowed “all files at all times” permission.

Returning to Gallery to reinstate permissions. Photo and video is allowed, but entering that setting “sub settings” of that permission is greyed out. Save a Contact image from Gallery confirmed causes “Gallery keeps stopping”.

when you get to the “is stopping”, there usually is a telling stacktrace in logcat
