[UNOFFICIAL BUILD] Nothing Phone 2 (Pong) for /e/OS-U

Thanks for your detailled answer !
It’s OK for me to have few more step to make the update in this case

Apart from the features specific to Google components, is there a drop in user experience as a result of switching to /e/?
I’m thinking, for example, of a less powerful camera (as I noticed at the time on my Fairphone3 with the switch to /e/ ).

Happy to help =).

I’m going to go with “it depends”. I have a friend of mine who just loves the Google ecosystem. He opts into every option available, and loves having all of his data available at his fingertips. If I asked him where he went on April 17, 2021, he could tell me in about two minutes. If he wanted a list of the Youtube videos he watched on April 17, 2021, he could tell me. If he wanted to search for e-mails with the fuzziest of search terms, he could find it. Password management has never been problem for him; all he does is log into Chrome and every password he needs is available, regardless of the device.

He’s thrilled with the functions Google gives him, and for him /e/OS would be a massive step down, even with a self-hosted /e/Cloud server with my Nextcloud mods and additional Docker containers…and if we’re being honest, I doubt /e/ will ever be able to truly match it.

For me…I loathe the amount of data Google has on me. I don’t need that level of tracking for myself, and Google sure as hell doesn’t need it, either. It means I can’t tell you where I went on April 17, 2021…but it also means that Google (hopefully) can’t, either.

So, is there reduced functionality? Sure, but whether it’s a ‘bug’ or a ‘feature’ depends on whether independence of Google is a desired part of the system.

So, the /e/ Camera is a variant of Open Camera. On one hand, this can be a good thing, because it gives lots of manual control that Google Camera and the NothingCam does not. I appreciate the ability to specify which lens takes a photo, but Google Camera and NothingCam switch between lenses seamlessly based on pinch-zoom. NC and GC use data from multiple lenses simultaneously for its post-processing, so the default settings are probably better on GC and NC, but manual modes including lens selection are more useful in the right hands. Some NothingCam APK’s float around the internet; you may find one useful at your own risk.

So, there’s a whole lot of “it depends” involved in answering your question…I hope it helps!

Your answer is just perfect !
Thanks !

I just receive my NP2 and I want to change de ROM to /e/
On the first post, @ronnz98 give the sources and install instructions, but on the xdaforums, there is a big warning about the fact than the maintainer changed and there is a new thread to follow : https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-14-0-official-pong-crdroid-v10-6.4681514/
And it’s about crDroid

A have 3 questions :

  • what is the difference between crDroid and /e/OS?
  • is crDroid compatible with the @ronnz98’s ROM?
  • and if yes, have I to follow the official crAndroid process with the ronnz’s ROM, or should I follow the outdated thread instead posted by ronnz98?

crDroid and /e/OS are two custom ROMs based on Lineage. There exists a couple of custom ROMs based on Lineage
All custom ROMs based on Lineage are Android systems
You can follow the crDroid instructions:
https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-14-0-official-pong-crdroid-v10-6.4681514/

And instead of the crDroid ROM then install the /e/OS-ROM

Thanks, it become more clear for me.
I’m following this tutorial and I have a question about the second step :

My NOS version is PacmanPro-U2.6-241217-1545
On the given link, I have this :

But when I go to the “Here” link to download the OTA Image to load to Magisk, I get a lot of files and I’m not sure which one I should get :

Sorry for all these questions, but I’m a newbie with ROM flashing, and I don’t want to brick my new phone…

This ROM is for Nothing Phone (2) which device id is Pong. As far as I can see PacmanPro is the device id Nothing Phone (2a) Plus…

You’re right, my device is a Nothing Phone (2a) plus.
I guess your ROM isn’t compatible with it… is it?

No, the smartphones have different chipsets. The NP (2) has a qualcomm cpu while the NP (2a) and NP (2a) plus do have a mediatek cpu. For the NP (2a) and NP (2a) plus there are currently no custom ROMs.
Maybe the Murena team might consider it to develop for it…then all Nothing phones would have /e/OS :grinning:

Update for /e/OS-U 2.8

e-2.8-u-20250301-UNOFFICIAL-Pong.zip

Thank you for maintaining this rom. I have been using it for the last several days and so far everything seems to works well.
One thing I have noticed though that I can’t find any info on is with the display brightness. At anything above 50% the display looks good but once I drop it lower it becomes kinda washed out, dim, for lack of a better term, like not as sharp or vibrant.
I have messed with color calibration a bit and the prebuilt color setting but nothing seems to work for that. Is this a ROM calibration issue? I would imagine Nothing has set the stock OS to be calibrated specificly for their displays, I’m wondering if that is something that can be replecated in e/os. Sorry, I don’t have much experience on the backbend of custom roms so my knowledge on that is a little limited but have been flashing them since the early days of android.
Either way, thanks again, keep up the good work, hope we see this as an official ROM someday.

hey @ronnz98 ! As always, thank you for doing God’s work in getting us NP2 owners /e/OS updates.

Two things I wanted to put past you; I was hoping they’d be sorted out after the upgrade, but…not so much.

The first is that Nova Launcher seems to crash a lot when I use it. If I force stop it, it comes back fine, but having to go through the process is a bit annoying. I’ve been using Nova for quite some time, and perhaps it’s a “them” issue, but my issue with Bliss is that I want a drawer for apps and an empty home screen, rather than an iPhone style ‘sea of icons’, which I don’t think Bliss does. Any idea what this could be?

The second thing is that the App Lounge still isn’t working in Anonymous mode. It’s saying that I’m on version 2.13.2, but it still doesn’t ever load apps, at all. I’ve got things mostly-sorted with Aurora, but my understanding was that App Lounge was fixed a few versions ago?

I’m just hoping for some pointers if you happen to have any =)
