I am unsure whether I first need to downgrade to the official Samsung S8 rom and then do the upgrade or can I just start from the unofficial version (Android 13, Sep 2024) to a newer official version (12) of e/OS

You don’t need to touch Stock Firmware as the device was abandoned by Samsung with
android 9 in 2021

android 12 is abandoned by Gogol, and no more receive security updates since march 2025

Backup your things as you may be forced to format the /data partition if changing branch / builder…

If your are formatting you phone I suggest that you go right to A14. I think that is possible with eOS but someone can correct me if that is wrong.
