Very disappointed in the fairphone 6 and Murena

So, I have had a fairphone 6 since October.

First Issue is the USB port complaining about water/debris if your finger covers the port. Whatever sensors they are using are of poor quality.

Second issue, the camera/mic lock being software. I feel like the advertising for the camera/mic lock was misleading and implied that it was a hardware lock. It is also very disappointing that the Murena version still does not allow changing what the yellow switch does. A software lock does little for security and being unable to change what the yellow switch does, makes the switch all but useless.

Third issue would be the speed at which security updates are pushed to the Murena fairphone 6. A phone claiming to be about privacy and security, lagging behind in security updates…..

Fourth issue, no wireless charging. This one is on me, as I did not check weather the phone had wireless charging before purchasing it. Most new phones have this feature though.

Fifth issue, fairphone 6 uses usb 2.0. What brain dead person at fairphone decided it would be a good idea to use usb ports from 2 decades ago. While the wireless charging issue is on me, this is definitely on fairphone. There is no way you can justify putting in usb 2.0 ports on a phone released in 2025.

Sixth issue, Murena customer support. Murena takes weeks to get back to me every time I reply. My screen started having issues with a dead pixel and a green line across the screen. Now the top half of the screen is solid white and the bottom have constantly flashes white. I have been trying to get a replacement screen since January 11th. Murena, for whatever reason, does not sell fairphone 6 parts on their website. If they did, I would have given up on customer support/warranty and just purchased a screen so that I could get my phone up and running again. Why have a phone designed around the right to repair, if you wont sell the repair parts!?!?! This is by far my biggest complaint.

Seems that you have a big issue that is your phone.

Where did you buy it?

I would say, let replace the whole phone…

Why do you want to repair a each parts of the phone? even if it’s reaparable.

The sense of a reparable phone to buy each part to repair, is at first it should be 100% operable. Seems that’s not the case by you.

It’s maybe wrong assembled, then replace it by a good one.

I hope you’ve not tried to disasembled it already…

I think you didnt read the specs before buying a phone. You could have known the USB 2.0 port. Fairphone will never support wireless charging because it is not sustainable due to the Loss of energy.

Regarding the security updates. Murena is up to date because the last update was 1 month ago.

The speed of downloading updates has nothing to with security. Dont blame People if most mistakes are not made by the company.

For those not aware, Android has security vulnerabilities, just like every other operating system. You can view the latest security patches on the android security bulletin. Last time I was keeping watch on a specific CVE, my fairphone 6 did not have the CVE patch until a couple of months after the official release. Looking into the release history of e/os, it seems most of the time e/os releases updates on monthly basis, with some months skipped (Like November). I believe Murena pushes updates to the fairphone 6 only every two to three months though. ***Edit: I cannot verify the rate at which my phone revived updates, only that I know there was a couple month gap when checking for updates to resolve a CVE and that since buying the phone in October, I have only received 2 updates. With November being skipped and the phone screen dying this month, it does seem to add up to a monthly update. The fifth and sixth issues are why I wrote this post to begin with, but wanted to include any other issues I experienced since getting the phone.

I may only help on the second point : you can change the switch function by going to Settings / System / switch.

And for security update, it seems link to Google policy for AOSP (from monthly to quarterly based). Graphene OS has written some posts about this.

I am sorry for your disappointment. I got a Fairphone 6 since 2 months, and it works well!

Do you have the Murena imaged phone or the image that fairphone uses? Last I knew, the Murena image did not have the ability to configure what the yellow switch did. I believe the app that allows the fairphone image to change what the switch does, is called moments or something? I cant verify on my phone, as the screen is not working and I am still waiting on support to get back to me about a replacement.

The ASOP link was just to the landing page for security updates. On the left you can view any given month’s updates. The gitlab for e/os links to it was well, but links to the specific month that it is referencing. I included both links, just for clarity, in case anyone wanted to see what CVEs have been patched recently.

Piero, if I had the ability to use the phone, I would be more than happy to provide the exact e/os version. But as I have said in the reply you quoted, the screen is not functioning. Assuming I am ever able to get a replacement screen, I will check if the setting Kicoup mentioned is present and if not, I will grab the e/os version.

Murena sells mobile devices with /e/OS pre-installed. Updates are neither more nor less frequent. There is only one operating system (/e/OS).

If you do not receive an update on time, you can reduce the frequency to “once a week” or “once a day” (Settings → System updates). You can also follow the forum here to see when an update has been released and then manually check when it is available for your device.

Well in the release pages you can read what improvements came.

With 3.4 pre-installed the configuration is available. Might have been an issue with older versions, though.

Using your sources, agreed November was skipped (and July), but otherwise monthly as I see

While I can understand certain expectations not met and therefore some frustration, I wonder whether it’s appropriate to insult someone from FP Team.

Like someone also commented below, it’s in the specs, KB/FAQ and similar brain may be used for a) reading this prior to purchase and b) considering it’s a mid-class phone. Even higher priced phones (like iPhone 16) still use USB 2.0 speed…. .

Going.forward all the best for resolving the issues and a bit politer and more respectful communication would be great

You are correct, I should not have insulted anyone. It seems the original post is to old to edit, so I cannot remove that part of the post. I apologize for for being disrespectful.

In regards to the usb port and checking the specs:

Mid grade Android phones, like Google Pixel 9a/Samsung Galaxy S25 FE both have USB 3. Murena’s spec sheet does not list the USB versioning. Since the last few phones I have owned over the years, all had USB 3 ports(As far back as when I had a pixel 1, a decade ago), it never occurred to me to go verify the USB port on a third party spec site. Rest assured though, I will always verify the USB versioning before buying a phone in the future.

Pls see:

https://shop.fairphone.com/the-fairphone-gen-6 specs

But yes, Murena shop doesn’t seem to list it… while showing many other technical specs….

Hi Merin3of5,

Sorry for the answer delay.

I have bought a Fairphone with android 15 installed ; but given that I didn’t like it, and that /e/os seemed more in my philosophy, I installed it (and kept it ) from /e/os website.

Version is 3.4-a15 (official fp6).

I have moved from Android to /e/os when Fairphone announced they have moved their camera app on /e/os. I discovered then that they also have adapted Moments, which were the two only reasons for me to stay on Android 15.

So if your version is below 3.4, some Fairphone applications may not be available. Good news, an update will solve the case :-).

After a long wait, I have finally gotten a new screen and installed it. It seems updates have been queuing up while my phone has been unusable, so I think the update lag I experienced was just November being skipped, me purchasing the phone just before then, and then the phone screen dying shortly after. Murena support says that they should now have spare parts in stock, so people can at least repair their phones(I verified that the website now shows the parts for sale). After pushing the latest queued update, I have Moments available as well.
