VoLTE on Samsung Galaxy S10+ (is it working now?)

Yes.

Thanks for the answer. My abo is by premiumsim.
As far as I know, premiumsim use the O2 and d1 (or 1&1) network not the vodafone one.
could be the point that it switch onto the 2g because vodafone is a foreign network?
Or I should see with premiumsim that my sim card gives the possibility to use volte and vowifi?

I have no way of knowing the complex way that your carrier may be able to handle your calls, but your Samsung will not be able to put Voice over LTE using a custom ROM as that proprietary firmware is simply not there.

If your carrier is good enough to put your mobile data over “4G lte” (or other) and put your voice over 2G … well great, long may it continue.

premiumsim as drillisch brand is part of 1&1. If you inevitably (rollout until end of year) get one of the new “5g” SIMs you’re using their new separate network and roam into Vodafone when not available. Old SIMs pre-migration used telefonica/o2.

I got a new sim for last month for the 5g. but the issue is still on doing :frowning:

your Samsung can’t do VoLTE with /e/OS, the drop to 2G for a voice call is expected and necessary (does the 2G voice call actually work then?)

that works but awfull quality. most of the time is too low or hacked

if 2g voice calls had better quality in the same place, could be up to using a different tower.

to lengthen the devices lifespan use something like Satellite.me (see some comments) and rely more on messengers Call function for friends / family - more latency, but much higher audio quality

ok… does that mean that all is normal and expected by me ?
And the bad call quality is not only because it changed to 4g into 2g. but it use an other provider and maybe the network is not so good at some specific place?

some tell that samsung devices have some weird capacities for have volte and vowifi wit eos…
Means that devices from other constructors (like google or fairphone for example) may have more capability or potential regarding this?

there’s VoLTE geared buying advice further up the thread if you look for other devices.

Samsung has nice phones, just that they shipped a very hard to port IMS stack. Imo this thread purpose is to keep tabs on what has been tried to make it work on Samsung phones (also linked further up).

Ok so to resume the issue. I’ve a phone from samsung where the Volte functionality from samsung is not available/deleted/not accessible under EoS
my sim card give the possibility to use it, but can’t use it. and by every calls the phone use the backup network type (or default one accessible) the 2G.
It will work well like this until the 2G network will be stopped where I am (means the 30 juin 2028 ). Then until this moment of cut off I should prospect and get a new phone which may support 4G & 5G.
Nothing could be done or solved easily, possible but with as high risk of brick the phone.
Better, regarding the age of teh hardware would be to a look onto a recent one

Is that correct?

sums it up, yes.

I’d try to rely on alternative call methods now (“OTT calls”, VoIP), not wait until 2G is disabled.

For the technically inclined who have a (spare?) Samsung to test, there’s 2 options linked in this thread that possibly could give you VoLTE: flashing a GSI and using floss-ims (relatively easy) or “smali patching” (hard).

If you have until 2028, I’d just hang on and see what happens. There are people out-there trying to reverse engineer Samsung’s IMS implementation. It is possible they will succeed by 2028.
Besides, by 2028, the battery on your phone might be done, so you might need to replace it, anyway.

:+1: that’s I will do I think.
and maybe i’ll do a 2g heatmap for my house to see where is it the best place to call… :slightly_smiling_face:

From my personal experience:
-My Samsung (A5 2017) is on the list of devices supported by the Orange operator, but you have to restore the stock ROM, so when 2G and 3G disappear, you won’t be able to make calls or send texts with e/os.
-I have a Motorola Z2 Play. VoLTE is well integrated, but since it is not on the operator’s list, calls do not work with VoLTE either (IMS not certified).

All of this is going to become a real headache and very restrictive in terms of device choice.

Juste to make sure I understand: is it when 2G is shut down that the problem occurs, or when both 2G AND 3G are shut down?

That makes a big difference. In France, 2G should be shut down during 2026 (which is pretty soon), but 3G should be kept at least until the end of 2028 (which leaves more time)

I’m asking because we are preparing a flash-party, and I would need to warn people wanting to flash such Samsung devices

Calls are made using 3G, so I have until 2028. It’s easy to check: just look at the network status during a call…

The battery is the easiest thing to change on a smartphone; the Volte/IMS issue is a more important criterion.
